Gingrich, Christie are the leading candidates to be Trump’s running mate

By Robert Costa and Karen Tumulty June 30 at 7:49 PM

Donald Trump’s campaign has begun formally vetting possible running mates, with former House speaker Newt Gingrich emerging as the leading candidate, followed by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. But there are more than a half dozen others being discussed as possibilities, according to several people with knowledge of the process.

Given Trump’s unpredictability, campaign associates caution that the presumptive Republican nominee could still shake up his shortlist. But with little more than two weeks before the start of the Republican National Convention, Gingrich and Christie have been asked to submit documents and are being cast as favorites for the post inside the campaign. Gingrich in particular is the beneficiary of a drumbeat of support from Trump confidants such as Ben Carson.

A number of senators — including Jeff Sessions (Ala.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.) — are also being reviewed as viable picks, although the extent to which they are being vetted is unclear. A longer shot on Trump’s radar is Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, a heavyweight on the right who could bolster Trump’s tepid support among some conservative activists.

But Pence is immersed in his reelection race and Trump is said to want a more electric politician at his side rather than a low-profile figure. Most of his primary rivals are reluctant to sign on, and tensions with Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Sen. Ted Cruz (Tex.) remain raw.

No Republican politician with any sort of future wants anything to do with Donnie Smallfingers. He can only attract losers and has-beens.

MSNBC said today Gingrich has the advantage due to his Washington experience, which is something Trump said he'd be looking for.

Gingrich might be a better fit because he's about as much of a moral slagheap as Trump. On the other hand, Christie has been obsequious enough that Trump might like the idea of a houseboy as a running mate. Gingrich has the drawback of being almost as egomaniacal as Trump.

I can see Gingrich tying himself into knots explaining as Trump bobs and weaves more than a woven hairpiece. I would have thought someone intelligent like Gingrich could see that coming and find the prospect excruciating.

But then again, however smart he might be, Gingrich was never wise.

I think, and it's not worth much, that Gingrich is a lesser form
of the same narcissism that devours Trump, Gingrich being more
self-righteous and of course more religious

With Christie you'll have two blowhard bullies at the top of the ticket!!!!

Gingrich? Just think: George Jetson meets Scrooge and Marley!!! Gingrich combines a simplistic, Pop-sci futurism with a libertarianism right out of 19th Century London.

oh yes! Trump/Gingrich or Trump/Christie are both going to go down hard.

How can the family values types support this ticket? No one is particularly religious.

Gingrich tries to sound professorial, which would make Drumpf sound even crazier in contrast.

Christie brings what to the table exactly?

Nobody wants to be associated with the losing side in a historic landslide!

It would be hard to find two more repulsive people than Christie and Gingrich.
The republican ticket no matter who Trump chooses will go down in flames, just as it should. They have nothing to offer the middle / working classes. That's why they have to resort to gerrymandering, voter suppression, and electoral fraud to gain office.
