'Star Trek' actor Anton Yelchin dies in car crash at age 27
Source: Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (AP) Anton Yelchin, a charismatic and rising actor best known for playing Chekov in the new "Star Trek" films, has died at the age of 27. He was killed in a fatal traffic collision early Sunday morning, his publicist, Jennifer Allen confirmed.
Yelchin started small with roles in indie films and various television shows, before breaking out in films like the crime thriller "Alpha Dog" and the teenage comedy "Charlie Bartlett." His biggest role to date has been in the rebooted "Star Trek" films the third of which, "Star Trek Beyond" comes out in July.
Yelchin, an only child, was born in Russia. His parents were professional figure skaters who moved the family to the United States when Yelchin was a baby. Yelchin's family requests privacy at this time.

Nothing further at source at this time.
This'll be rough with the big press push coming up for the cast over the next month as they range around the world. It'll become a partial celebration of Yelchin as well, which is definitely a plus. But I can't imagine the kind of mental exhaustion in having to work through the loss of someone you spend so much time with in this way, the "Theatrical family", and then move forward in the marketing of it.

Story about this on TMZ calls it a "freak accident" says he was found at his house on a steeply inclined driveway, pinned between his car and a brick mailbox, car was in neutral with engine running.
RIP.

(25,327 posts)Actor Anton Yelchin, perhaps best known for his role in the new Star Trek films, died early Sunday after his vehicle rolled down his Studio City driveway and trapped the actor against a mailbox,... Authorities believe Yelchins vehicle rolled backwards down the steep driveway, Houser said, pinning him against a brick mailbox and security gate.

(1,301 posts)I parked in my friend's steep driveway. No one ever told me it had to be in gear. When I left her house, my car was gone. It had rolled down her driveway and crashed into a tree. I guess it could have been worse...
It's not an intuitive thing--parking in neutral seems to make sense, if you don't know better. And, there are a lot less people in this generation familiar with standard transmission.

This is very disappointing. And it sounds like a freak accident where his car rolled downhill and pinned him against a wall. Sounds like a horrible way to go.

(20,453 posts)... was when he played the half-Alien in Steven Spielberg's "Taken", a little remembered mini series that came out in 1999 or 2000. I have it on DVD. Famous line to the character, Owen Wilson... "I'm not flying your spaceship".
I was so happy to see him play Chekov in the newer Star Trek and continued loving him.
I'm saddened. It'll kill me to see the next Star Trek, but I wouldn't miss it.
Rest easy, bright star.

(4,959 posts)The Latest: SUV that rolled, killed actor was under recall
Updated 11:09 am, Monday, June 20, 2016
LOS ANGELES (AP) The Latest on the death of "Star Trek" film actor Anton Yelchin (all times local):
9:45 a.m.
The SUV that killed "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin was being recalled because the gear shifters have confused drivers, causing the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly.
Los Angeles police say Yelchin died when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled down his driveway early Sunday. The SUV pinned the 27-year-old against a brick mailbox pillar and a security fence.
Fiat Chrysler, which makes Jeeps, said in a statement Monday that it's investigating and it's premature to speculate on the cause of the crash. It offered sympathies to Yelchin's friends and family.
Most 2015 model year Grand Cherokees were part of a global recall of 1.1 million vehicles announced by Fiat Chrysler in April.

(130,122 posts)I saw this story on a news site last evening where I was reading another article... and am heartbroken. He was such a talented actor and nailed Walter Koenig's "Chekov", doing so in spectacularly humorous fashion.
WAY too young to leave us. Condolences to his family.
