I used to work at a store that sold some of his art. Since I worked alone, I was in charge of it. I'm trying to remember if I sold any, there was much of it that I liked, horses, if I recall. Godspeed, Mr. Neiman. Your talent will sure be missed...

He captured... motion better than anyone. Of course, for the middle-aged, adolescent boys out there (such as myself ), he will always be known as the creator of Femlin...

as posters. That may have made him one of the post well-known living painters in America. I still remember a couple of them (female gymnast on the bar or horse and swimmer in the water). Great stuff.

Probably best known pop artist after Warhol by the general public.

in Neiman. So a comparison to Warhol fails in my opinion. But I do think a lot of Americans like his works' illustrative values of vivid color. I really can't see the kinetic values so many people see in his works...

Here is a post of mine with offerings from other artists (that I do like myself) in the genres that Nieman painted: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002838141

I offer them as an alternative. The first one is by Bellows from the Ashcan School which I find very fine and exciting. The second is Dufy, a terrific French artist of the late Impressionist school and the third is Winslow Homer who did some stunning works of sailing and the sea.

Just my two cents really...

Honestly, he wasn't someone I loved as an artist but he had great talent and made sports truly beautiful. Hope his passage was easy and his family has peace.

US artist LeRoy Neiman, an official painter of five Olympiads famed for his instant renditions of sporting action, has died in New York aged 91.

One of the world's most commercially successful contemporary artists, Neiman's colourful paintings were as distinctive as his handlebar moustache.

He captured events as diverse as the Super Bowl, the Grand National and the Cannes Film Festival.

Some of his most famous paintings were of the boxer Muhammad Ali.

His publicist Gail Parenteau confirmed his death at a Manhattan hospital but did not disclose the cause.

To me, he still seemed relatively young back when I first knew about him in 1976. I really like his use of bold colors. I would love to have one of his African wildlife paintings, or the one of Secretariat, or "Blue Hockey", which featured Bobby Hull, and the one of Bobby alone. And, of course, pretty much all of the baseball paintings.

I'm sorry he's gone.
