California voter registration surges ahead of primary
Source: Politico
By DANIEL STRAUSS
A record number of Californians registered to vote ahead of the June 7th primary, the California secretary of state's office reported Friday.
Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced that 17,915,053 Californians had registered to vote, "the highest ever total statewide voter registration heading into a primary election."
"In the 45 days leading up the voter registration deadline, there was a huge surge in voter registration total statewide voter registration by nearly 650,000," Padilla said. "Part of this surge was fueled through social media, as Facebook sent a reminder to all California users register to vote."
Registration increased for the Democratic and Republican parties, as well as for 'no party preference' designation.

(41 posts)I suppose that one of the reasons for this "surge" has to do with the novelty of a California primary vote actually counting!! I don't remember when that happened before. This doesn't necessarily mean that those people are all going to vote for Bernie. Also, a very significant number of ballots has already been cast by mail (very prevalent in Ca. as well) and those seem to favor Hillary. It should be interesting to find out on Tuesday what the numbers really are.

(15,139 posts)criss crossing the state the last two weeks holding big rallies in many cities in front of large, enthusiastic crowds. Californians are feelin the Bern and are determined to send him to the convention with momentum from a big win here. I'm just happy that in this primary I finally have someone to vote for rather than the usual choice between the lesser of two evils.

(24,010 posts)...is massive turnout. The vote flippers might shy away for fear of being detected (perhaps depending on the importance of the vote--they were blatant in 2004) or might have to be "too clever" with the code, and trip themselves up in detectable ways.
It is VERY WORRISOME!
Also, as we've learned in New York and elsewhere, electronics have made it much, MUCH easier to strip masses of voters out of the voting rolls, who won't know anything about it until voting day, and then, of course, there is no remedy (except for the infamous "provisional ballots," which almost never get counted, and which, in any case, are only given to people who can show bona fides that they are registered and registered the way they intended**).
This, too, is VERY WORRISOME!
Want to hear something else that is VERY WORRISOME? As I understand it, the networks have decided to do NO MORE EXIT POLLS as of last week or so. Exit polls are the ONLY way the public can detect election fraud (in electronic systems). They are the worldwide standard for ensuring honest vote counting.
YIKES!!!!!!!!
Well, maybe, if they do it to Bernie here in California, we will finally, finally, FINALLY get the public uprising we need to get rid of these goddamned, privatized, EASILY riggable systems !

**(If you are a "No Party Preference" (NPP) voter in California, and happen to read this: Know that YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO BE GIVEN A DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY BALLOT ON JUNE 7 AT YOUR POLLING PLACE. DO NOT ACCEPT A "PROVISIONAL BALLOT"! IF THEY WON'T GIVE YOU THE DEMOCRATIC BALLOT, CALL THE COPS--BECAUSE THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW!)

(4,234 posts)Since about 2002, it has been the reason for gradual changes in the Repub/Dem percentages overall, both state and national candidates.
All it would take is a required audit so as to VERIFY THE VOTE, at least a 5% recount of the paper ballots by hand in randomly chosen precincts. And then, of course, if and when disparities are discovered a REQUIRED COMPLETE RECOUNT.

(24,010 posts)... our entire 'establishment,' even the best among them, act as if they've been struck blind by Zeus!
Many ordinary people DO know, but I think they just classify it with all the other ways elections are rigged and they are screwed.
But it is FUNDAMENTAL. It is WHY we have an 8%-approval-rating Congress. It is WHY we have nutball governors of otherwise sane and progressive states. It is WHY all the other stuff is happening, including the uncontrolled literal buying of elections, and vote suppression like "voter ID," voter purges and jerrymandering. It is WHY official policy is almost always the opposite of what most people want. It is the final nail hammered into the coffin of our democracy, and until we wedge that one out--the privatized vote tabulation--and start kicking the lid off, no other reform can be achieved, and our democracy is going to suffocate.
It's a no-brainer.

Donald Trumps presidential campaign is spurring a record number of citizenship applications and increases in voter registration among Latinos upset by the candidates rhetoric and fearful of his plans to crack down on immigration.

When the deadline to register to vote in California's June 7 primary closes Monday evening, Democrats are expected to be the big winners. The party has enjoyed a dramatic spike in registration since the beginning of the year and they have Donald Trump to thank for it.
