"Business owner Richard Master knows firsthand how the dysfunctional U.S. health care system punishes not only patients, but also employers who are forced to spend more and more to insure their workers. His documentary, "Fix It," makes a strong business case for addressing this festering problem, and includes interviews with many PNHP members. A trailer for the film can be accessed above, or you can view the full version for free by visiting the "Fix It" website."

(6,852 posts)How we get there is up for discussion.
One option can be to try and get a public option added to the ACA as a step to getting to single payer.
People will predict doom and gloom and the sky won't fall down just like it didn't with the ACA.
If we get single payer in this country it will not be one victory. It will be a series of small victories over a period of time.
That is how all progress has been made.

(57,936 posts)available through a tax-paid plan. And I don't mean the once a month visits that state plans now afford people who have serious diagnoses in some cases that I know but a real plan like maybe Medicare for all cancer patients because cures are available but diagnosis is terrifying to many due to the fact that those cures are so expensive.
Makes no difference, but we have to keep the goal of universal, not-for-profit healthcare out there. Medicare for all with the choice to pay extra for private insurance and the extras that might go with it should be a goal in our country.
Hillary's it'll never happen really disgusts me. Other countries have it. It costs less per patient than what we have in most cases.
We need to make progress a lot faster than we have been.

While some have benefitted, there are many others who are locked out of care in order to keep the for profit companies in place.

(60,010 posts)Mr. Dixie and I use the same medical clinic, we have different doctors.
Before ACA program, the charge for a basic office visit was 50.00.
2 years later it was 100.00.
The Dr. office found out they could charge more, so they did.
We are both on Medicare, usually see the doc once a year for brief exam and to get prescription renewal..nothing major, takes 20 minutes of Dr. time.
But we have to pay that 100.00 because our deductible is 140.00.
Until this year.
I went in Feb. for the basic appt. but the office manager said I did not have to pay anything.
Medicare allows for one Wellness Exam per year, she said.
I asked why they had charged me last year and year before and etc , and she gave me one of those looks that said she did not want to answer the question,
and I figured they were still getting their computer billing system figured out, so shrugged it off.
Mr. Dixie went in for his exam in April.
Came home, said he too did not have to pay.
But, we got the bill the other day.
$165.00 for "Medicare wellness Exam".
Which Medicare had not paid, some mix-up.
I called the Dr. office, they said they will re-submit the bill, not to worry, etc.
BUT this is how I found out that 165.00 is now what they are allowed to charge for the annual visit.
And so they did.

(3,544 posts)Surely there are more doctors than this, that are smart. And when you look at the big picture, 2K of well over 200K doctors is a very small percentage. Get 20K and see if it changes the scenery.
