Council members call for San Jose mayor (D) to back gay marriage

Source: San Jose Mercury News

Gay-rights activists Wednesday called on San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed to publicly support same-sex marriage with a resolution by several City Council members forcing him to confront a divisive social issue he has sought to avoid.

The resolution coming before Reed's agenda-setting committee Wednesday calls for scheduling a June 5 council vote to put both San Jose and the mayor on record in support of same-sex marriage.

... Reed, a conservative Democrat who has focused on the city's budget and economy, has said he personally opposes gay marriage but that he supports anti-discrimination laws and domestic partnership benefits for same-sex couples. He pointedly refused to take a public position on Proposition 8, the 2008 measure limiting marriage to a man and a woman that narrowly passed statewide but was opposed in most of the Bay Area including Santa Clara County.

Reed's office said he would have no comment on the proposed resolution before the matter came before his committee.
