Romney Campaign Massively Downgrades The Number Of Jobs It Claims He Created From 100,000 To Thousands
By Alex Seitz-Wald on May 14, 2012 at 12:08 pm
In its effort to sell Mitt Romney as someone who understands the economy and knows how to create jobs, one of his campaigns early talking points was that he helped create 100,000 jobs during his tenure at Bain Capital. The campaign repeated the claim throughout the primary, despite a glaring lack of evidence to support it (even Sarah Palin doubted it).
Romney eventually stopped repeating the talking point, which advisers had difficulty defending under pressure, and now it seems Boston has completely Etch A Sketched the number and severely lowered the number of jobs Romney is supposed to have created at Bain.
BuzzFeeds Zeke Miller reports that, in the wake of the Obama campaigns new ad attacking Romneys record at Bain, the new Romney jobs math is significantly more modest than the old. This time, the campaign is asserting that Romney created a meager and vague thousands of jobs at Bain and tens of thousands of jobs as governor of Massachusetts.
This is nothing less than an admission from the Romney campaign that their 100,000 jobs claim was entirely bogus, and acceptance that Romney created vastly fewer jobs than he claimed he had just a few months ago. Its a welcome return to reality, but calls into question any piece of evidence the campaign puts forward. (In 1994, he claimed in an ad that he created 10,000 jobs at Bain.)

(50,580 posts)Forget that "let fail" shit--in the case of Romney's Bain Vulture Capital, the businesses failed because of overwhelming debt loads and high management fees.
In six of those cases, Bain lost 100 percent of its investment.
Oh, and forget the "no better than Chainsaw Al" shit too--Chainsaw Al was far more competent than Mitt Romney.

(8,943 posts)1) Is the 1000's jobs created the total number?
2) Is this a difference between the numbers hired - (minus) numbers laid off?
Because if this is #1, I'd like to know the numbers laid off.
I'm sure that difference would be in the negative (i.e. More Layoffs then hires).

(37,163 posts)...-- he always trots out Stables as the big example -- how many of those simply replaced jobs lost at other companies Staples drove out of business.
It's not as if office supply was a new, emerging industry. And sort of by definition it is dependent on the health of other businesses for its own success, and absent Staples other companies would have been there to fill the needs.
So as far as jobs go, it's at best a wash, and more likely a net job loss.

(12,513 posts)Mitt the shit spent about 18 months as an actual governor, and he spent the next 2.5 years wandering the country campaigning for president and all the time bad-mouthing Mass. as liberal Kennedy country. The state was 47th in job creation when that asshole's governorship ended. He didn't create thousands of jobs, he lost them if anything.

(21,925 posts)I think three states were worse and one of those was Louisiana that lost jobs because of Hurricane Katrina. I know Romney constantly says he wants to talk about jobs but does he want to talk about his failure to create jobs at Bain and at Massachusetts? I doubt it.

(7,404 posts)At Bain was to look at Staples current employment and claim every one of those jobs as being created by him. Romney didn't create the business model for Staples or execute the business plan. Bain simply won the battle to provide the capital for Staples to expand rapidly and Romney does deserve credit for winning that battle. As far as States go, when Romney came into office the State was 37th in job growth, which is not so hot, but when he left office they were 47th in job growth, fighting with Mississippi in the race to the bottom. Romney has a problem with the jobs argument.
