Russian plane disappears in Indonesia
Source: CNN
Russia's newest civilian airliner disappeared Wednesday from radar screens during a demonstration flight in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, state-run RIA Novosti news service reported.
There were 44 passengers on board.
The pilots requested permission to descend from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet, air traffic controllers said. After that, all radio contact was lost.
The plane began making its descent but vanished from radar screens at 6,200 feet in a mountainous area.

(Reuters) - Rescuers resumed searching a mountain area south of the Indonesian capital at first light on Thursday for a Russian Sukhoi plane with 50 people on board that went missing during a demonstration flight and is presumed crashed.
Radio contact with Russia's first all-new passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union was lost at about 0800 GMT on Wednesday after it descended to 6,000 feet around Mount Salak, a volcano 7,254 feet above sea level, officials said.
The Superjet 100 plane was carrying Indonesian businessmen, Russian embassy officials and journalists. Dimitry Solodov from the embassy said there were eight Russians on board, including pilots and technicians.
"We have deployed an air search this morning but so far we have not located the plane. The sun has not come through to the area because the fog is very thick," Udjwalaprana Sigit, head of West Java disaster mitigation agency, told Reuters by telephone.

(101,399 posts)Due to the remoteness of the crash site, the bodies will need to be placed in nets and lifted by ropes to a hovering chopper, national search and rescue agency spokesman Gagah Prakoso said. The bodies from Wednesdays crash were to be flown to the capital, Jakarta, for identification by family members.
So far we havent found any survivors, but we are still searching, he said. I cannot say anything about the condition of the bodies, Prakoso said, but he added that: A high speed jet plane hit the cliff, exploded and tore apart.

The plane, Russias first new passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago, hit a jagged ridge on top of Mount Salak, a long-dormant volcano, leaving a giant earthy gash along the steep slope as it stripped trees.

(12,047 posts)"A demo flight - circle a volcano, impress some folks on board (and make the pilots' job a bit more exciting that day as well) - VFR conditions - Captain wants a close up of the crater hence he is requesting to go to 6,000ft, knowing full well he has to pay very close attention to terrain - terrible misjudgment of situational awareness occurs and it's simply too late. They almost cleared a cliff though..."

(12,047 posts)The plane left Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta for a quick test flight aimed at impressing potential buyers.
Twenty-one minutes after take-off, the crew asked for permission to descend from 10,000ft to 6,000ft, said Daryatmo.
The plane went off the radar immediately afterwards. It was not clear why the Russian pilot and co-pilot asked to drop down, especially when it was so close to the 7,000ft mountain, or if the descent was approved.

Actually I don't. I don't believe it at all, but I bet someone on the internet will write an article or blog about it.

(962 posts)I'm not sure what to make of that site though. I don't know if they're 100% serious or not, because some of the shit seems like it's written tongue-in-cheek. For example, there is an article on there that says the recent salmonella tainted dog food was a government plot to kill poor elderly people who rely on eating dog food. That's like something I'd say if I was trying to say something ridiculous to mess with people.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) Indonesian special forces have found the voice-and-data recorder of a new Russian passenger jet that slammed into a jagged, mist-shrouded cliff on a dormant volcano, an official said Wednesday.
The "black box" could help explain the cause of the deadly crash of the Sukhoi Superjet 100, which had been on a short demonstration flight for potential buyers. Search and Rescue agency spokesman Gagah Prakoso said it was found near the tail of the shattered wreck at the bottom of a 1,500-foot (500-meter) ravine.
The device was delivered to investigators late Tuesday. It was badly burned and lost its orange color, making it harder for search teams to find it among the trees and heavy brush, Prakoso said.

(55,445 posts)since there were mounted cameras in the cabin and flight deck...And if so, the kind of precedent it could set (using video cameras in the cockpit to investigate potential crashes has been a very sticky point of contention between pilots and aviation authorities)...
