Rick Perry: Allowing Guns In Movie Theaters Would Prevent Shootings
Source: Huffington Post

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) claimed that if people could bring their guns to the movies, they could have prevented the movie theater shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana, Thursday evening.
"These concepts of gun-free zones are a bad idea. I think that you allow the citizens of this country -- who have been appropriately trained, appropriately backgrounded, know how to handle and use firearms -- to carry them," he told CNNs Jake Tapper Sunday. I believe that, with all my heart, that if you have the citizens who are well trained, and particularly in these places that are considered to be gun-free zones, that we can stop that type of activity, or stop it before there's as many people that are impacted as what we saw in Lafayette."
Such a provision makes a lot of sense under the Second Amendment, the 2016 presidential hopeful said.
When Tapper asked if that solution would be more effective than strengthening gun control laws, Perry pushed argued that the problem in Lafayette and the recent shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, is a lack of enforcement.

I'd like for Rick, with his fancy Smart Guy Glasses, to explain how them having guns would have stopped him.
This is the rightwing vision of America. You can no longer enjoy a basic pleasure such as going to a movie. But, at best, you can carry a gun and hope there's some chance of survival if you can engage the nut in a wild west shootout.

Can you imagine a full dark theater and someone opens fire and in seconds 20 other shooters are returning fire? How many victims are going to be added by the guns of the 20?

(7,358 posts)I saw a young girl, about 20 something, had on a tank top, short shorts, flip flops and a gun belt strapped to her waist and and leg. It's as if it's becoming the norm. Now this was at the Starbucks. I guess what disturbs me is do these people know when it's appropriate to use the weapon? In a dark movie theater, I could see innocent people being harmed simply because they don't know where the shooting is coming from. I just don't go to movie theaters anymore. Sorry but it's just too easy to watch them at home now and I don't have to pay $5.00 for a popcorn.

I don't care what the NRA written law is. I have no idea if this person is a robber or a terrorist or what.
Younger people (at least the ones I know) are totally fine with guns, wanting to carry guns, etc. They talk about them like smartphones.
They've grow up with the best marketing and accessibility vs the old days when you felt sleezy going into a gun store. Kinda like porn has become easier to access...
And I still think movies, tv etc have normalized guns. They're seen as just another accessory to make you feel safe. And of course all the "good" guys have the best guns.

(1,941 posts)With over ten million concealed carry permit holders in the United States, not including those in states like Vermont or Maine that don't require permits...I'm not sure it makes much difference in terms of risk management to prohibit carry in movie theaters. But I can understand the concern. People just have to realize that we pass these folks on the street, in malls, at restaurants, etc. and they rarely cause any problems. I want to be clear though, I am only referring to people who conceal handguns in accordance with state and local laws.
I wouldn't dare suggest that lawful carriers can stop every shooting, they can't. But going by the numbers, I don't think carrying in movie theaters will make anything worse.

Why do you believe the map shows "defective thinking" ? It just illustrates the liberalization of carry laws over the last few decades. Here is a list of 2015 accomplishments, many of which were bipartisan efforts to expand firearm rights. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2015/07/20/a-survey-of-legislative-action-on-second-amendment-issues-in-2015/

"Good Guy with a Gun" Had Day Off During Louisiana Shooting
And...
LaPierre added, "If only one of the victims or someone else in that theater had the courage to bring a gun and defend themselves last night this could have been avoided. Once again, the shortage of guns and gun owners in America has been proven to be a deadly mistake."
"You never think this thing can happen in a state like Louisiana where I have made sure we have some of the most lax gun control laws in America," said Republican presidential candidate and Governor of Louisiana Piyush "Bobby" Jindal.

(46 posts)Why hasn't some gun control group tried an experiment. Get/select 25-50 volunteers. Equip all with non-lethal hand guns. Paint ball or more sophisticated laser weapons. Have one "shooter" randomly seated in the theater at the "shooters" discretion have him pick and fire at victims add sound effect gun shots muzzle flashes, high speed cameras on the shooter. etc. Let the volunteers return fire until the shooter has an empty weapon. Now look at the data. When and how many times was the shooter hit. Which shot would have been lethal to the shooter. How many innocent volunteers get shot. Now repeat the the experiment with trained volunteers. Cops, combat vets, certified weapons expert. Now look at the data. I'll bet in both cases innocent individuals will be shot. Less with trained weapons experts I would suspect. In either case it will prove or disprove the NRA's and Rick Perry's contention. The old line the "only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guys with a gun".
The experiment shouldn't be that difficult to stage. Hollywood does it all the time. Except this time they only set up the scene and record the events.
