Hillary Clinton voices support for higher wages for workers

Source: Crain's New York Business

Hillary Clinton sharpened her criticism against what she sees as Wall Street excess by targeting investors who demand short-term corporate measures like share buybacks and dividends to pump up a company's stock price.

"We need a new generation of committed, long-term investors to provide a counter-weight to the hit-and-run activists," the Democratic presidential candidate said Friday in a speech at New York University's Stern School of Business. She contrasted her favored approach with investors who agitate for immediate change "no matter how much it discourages and distracts management from pursuing strategies that would add the most long-term value."

Ms. Clinton has made economic inequality a centerpiece of her campaign, and has previously said that the nation's top 25 hedge fund managers earn more than all of U.S. kindergarten teachers combined. Still, she's received donations from big-name fund managers such as Paul Tudor Jones, the billionaire founder of Tudor Investment Corp., and Jamie Dinan, who started York Capital.

The former New York senator didn't single out any fund managers for criticism by name, nor did she cite specific confrontations that hurt companies' prospects. She did say that businesses and the economy would have more sustainable growth if the focus turned to reinvesting capital.

Americans are told constantly that they are underworked and overpaid, when of course the opposite is true.

I am not picking on HRC with this comment, at all, just that it is NEWS that an American politician would recommend Americans need to be paid better.

To listen to the right-wing and business media (same thing) you would think paying labor is the same thing as a worker revolt where rich people are being massacred. They talk with utter contempt about the "happiness index" because they don't CARE if their workers are miserable because they can always replace them. The ONLY thing that matters is their bottom line.

Two-faced mealy-mouthed bunch of nothing. It's right up there with a politician saying, "I support the American way."

As if she would voice support for lower wages.

Will she significantly (as in multiple tens of percent) raise taxes on the wealthy? Will she propose living wage legislation?

the cost of living varies across the country. OK. So with a 38 hour week - cause the corporate assholes won't hire people for 40 hours because then they'd have to include benefits, sick time, paid vacation, health insurance, etc., in the pay package - so a 38 hour week X $15/hour is a whopping $570 a week.

Based on 4.3 weeks per month, that's a magnanimous $2,450/month - before federal, state and local income taxes,or FICA withholding, with NO health insurance, no paid sick time (and you could still lose your job if you don't show up because you or your kid falls ill).

So, apparently, if you are fortunate to live in say, Bumfu*k, Oklahoma or Outer Armpit, Arkansas, as opposed to NYC, LA, San Francisco or other urban areas with sky high housing costs, and have no medical conditions, or car payments, auto repairs, dental or eyeglass costs, or student loan debt, AND then get paid the overwhelmingly magnanimous wage of $15 an hour, it will be "Oh, break out the caviar and champagne, no, make that chitlins' & moonshine, honey - we're livin' high on the hog now - we're on easy street for sure!

Anyone who begrudges any worker in this country from being paid a minimum wage of $15 an hour is so out of touch with financial realities, it's almost unbelievable.

President Obama has asked Congress a million times to do that exact thing, raise the Federal minimum, but they ignore him.

President Obama has mandated several pay raises where he legally can use mandates.

President Obama has also called on several businesses to raise their pay and several have raised base pay.

It's good to know Mrs. Clinton wants Americans paid better because remember what republican Romney said? He wanted to remove minimum wage laws.

prison workers don't have minimum wage protections, that's why they have to work for 22 cents an hour or a dollar a day... republicans want the same for all of you 47% of still able to vote 'users'

Your post about Obama has nothing to do with what Clinton proposed. At least Obama tried something.

Your favorite puppet only follows the bandwagon. HRC has never ever (ever) been a leader in any progressive economic or social legislation because she knows her masters would be unhappy.

Told him the 'pay' will become $16 in 6 months.

Nothing stops 'employers' or people who hire a kid or an adult for some errands from paying a better wage.

just electing someone is no guarantee what they propose will happen or can happen in this country if majority of citizens & Government will not let it happen.

That was a poor choice of words to follow "the need for long-term investors..." Why 'activists'? I have never heard crooked fund managers referred to as activists? Was she trying to still imply moderation for the WallStreeters that wanted to hear moderation and a stance against political activists while still saying that she was sort of against hedge fund managers to people that don't follow the news?

Her word choice is mind boggling and smells heavily of being very carefully screened, sifted, and selected in order to offend as few people as possible and stay business friendly.
