One day after Sandra Bland’s death, 18-year-old Kindra Chapman was found dead in jail

Source: rawstory

Just one day after Sandra Bland was found dead in her jail cell in Texas, another young black woman, Kindra Chapman, was found in eerily similar circumstances in a jail cell in Alabama.

The 18-year-old was arrested July 14 on accusations she stole a cell phone, according to AL.com. She was booked just before 6:30 p.m. and found unresponsive in her cell at 7:50 p.m. Like Bland, authorities have blamed Chapman’s death on suicide by hanging. Like Bland, Chapman’s family said the teen had a full and happy life and do not believe she committed suicide. Like Bland, Black Lives Matter activists have joined her family in demanding answers.

In an email to AL.com, Chapman’s mother, Kathy Brady, said she believes police killed her daughter, and that she wasn’t notified of Chapman’s death until 9 p.m.

Other family members who spoke with reporters said Chapman wouldn’t have killed herself.

“I want answers, like where was she for 45 minutes,” her cousin Otis Chapman asked local station WBRC. “There’s surveillance all around… She would not harm herself at all… In my heart, she wouldn’t do nothing like that.”

She was booked for stealing a cell phone and there aren't any reports of a violent arrest. However, there doesn't seem to be much of a motive for someone to kill her at this point.

Kindra Chapman, an 18-year-old found dead in her Homewood jail cell last week, committed suicide by hanging herself with a bed sheet, authorities and family members said today.

Despite community concern that the teen's death was a result of police brutality – protesters chanted for justice in Chapman's "lynching" as recently as Wednesday night during a Sandra Bland rally in New York – video evidence of the hanging, along with witness statements, confirmed what police have said all along.

From above link:

While in the cell, the video shows that she appeared to be agitated, and she attempted to damage the contents of the cell. She knocked over a water cooler, took a bed sheet, and stood on the cooler to tie the bed sheet to a wall support rail extending from the ceiling. She then used the sheet to commit suicide, Falls said.

I wonder why they don't have closed circuit TV so that they can actually see in real-time what the inmates are doing.

The big money is in prisons; jails are generally underfunded and understaffed.

If the girl did commit suicide though I get why the mother might want to deny it because she probably feels like she is to blame for not knowing her daughter wanted to kill herself and she shouldnt feel that way because its not in any way her or anyones "fault" except maybe the police for not keeping a better eye on the girl.
Edit: I took so long writing that I missed the post from 4139

If she did kill herself, then what drove her to it? She was in jail for just a couple hours!

I wonder if it was the stress of being arrested, and fear of what her parents and friends would say. TBH I was caught stealing as a teen and my terror (of my parents finding out) was enormous.

That's all I can imagine: she was so ashamed and terrified, that she killed herself in a state of near-irrationality, to escape the situation.

If there was video, should someone have been watching it in time to intervene?

So sorry for that family.

The video at the OP link doesn't show any of the events. It was made by the police chief in response to the rumors that were spreading, explaining the sequence of events. She matched the description by clothes and appearance, was found in a breezeway at the building next door, was detained without incident, taken to crime scene and positively ID'd by victim, then taken to station, booked, etc.

She'd made her call but wasn't able to reach whoever she called. They found her very shortly after she hung herself, immediately got her down and started CPR. She was given CPR continuously by the police on the scene, the EMTs through ambulance ride to hospital, and then hospital staff spent an additional half hour trying to rescusitate, for a total of an hour+.

for' profit prisons' for immigrants and locked up American in for profits. They have to pay for every call.

The immigrant prison offers them $1.00 a day "pay"to scrub the floors and do other work, to earn enough money to call their family members once a month.

and if, as in Sandra Bland's case, the "friend" fails to show up with promised bail, they should be able to keep calling until they find somebody else to help them.

And in prison they should be able to have frequent contact with family, either by phone or face-to-face. People need a reason to keep going...

kick and punch police deal out.

Plenty of people kicked, punched, grounded by police, & bitten by their attack dogs have permanent injury.

The States are responsible for the injuries from their police. Time for the state to pay out medical costs and support to everyone their police injure.
