Report: Ed Schultz out at MSNBC

Source: Inforum

Ed Schultz's "The Ed Show," a news commentary program on MSNBC, is being canceled as part of a shakeup in its afternoon lineup, the website Mediaite reported overnight.

The article says a “well-placed” source claims MSNBC will make the announcement today.

In addition to former Fargo sportscaster’s show, "The Cycle" and "Now with Alex Wagner" are also being canceled, the report states.

Schultz began his broadcasting career in the 1980s as a sportscaster with WDAY and rose to prominence with "News and Views" and the syndicated "The Ed Schultz Show" on KFGO AM. He still owns a home near Detroit Lakes, Minn.

I'm beginning to believe that the Keith Olbermann rumor has legs. Big election coming up. They could use that notorious of a personality.

I remember when I was one of the few Ed boosters here a few years ago. I was told at DU that he was a 'secret Republican.'

I don't care to watch for three hours while the 2 or 3 topics-de-jour are discussed over and over and over. As much as I hate to say it they need to copy some basic concepts from Faux as far as presenting a broad range of stories all the way from human interest to politics, with a splattering of in-depth analysis from Rachel thrown in. IMO THAT would make it worth watching.

I think MSNBC really likes going with just a couple of stories sucking up the news cycle 24/7. Maybe it's cheaper for them not to have to send out teams of reporters to chase down stories. After all they have sponsors like Boeing giving them money. Have you ever asked yourself why Boeing advertises? It's not like the majority of us are going to run out and buy a jet.

They want political influence. Bernie is so right about the billionaires, the oligarchs.

They even control what news stories get covered.

Ed Schultz is a big loss to all of America even those who don't watch his show.

He was just about the only person on television who really cared about working people's problems.

Republican or Hillary wins the next election.

This is politics on TV, not news on TV.

Americans are stupid to keep paying cable companies to interfere in politics in this way.

This is an obviously political move. Just like the fact that Fox is part of basic cable although it is strictly a propaganda organ of the extreme right-wing.

Stop your cable subscription. Subscribe to the news programming you want on-line. Real News Network, Cenk with The Young Turks, the Pacifica Network, so much good information and news on-line. Who in the world needs cable TV.

You can subscribe to other shows via Netflix and Hulu and similar internet services. Use your TV as an extension of the internet and you don't have to pay your dues to the right wing that owns cable.

Drop Make it Plain. Put Rick Smith on the slot behind that. Sirius is ONLINE too.

http://ricksmithshow.com/

http://ricksmithshow.com/meet-rick-smith

In 2005, The Rick Smith Show stepped into a local radio world devoid of progressive talk. Rick took his straight shooting no nonsense Teamster outlook to the air and started mixing it up with conservatives from one of the reddest areas north of the Mason Dixon line. His show grew steadily, attracting listeners starved for a voice that spoke to working stiffs who felt the economic floor crumbling beneath them.

Five years after the start of his weekend program, Rick moved to new time slots and new stations. His show now airs Monday-Friday 3pm-6pm on several stations across the state of Pennsylvania where he offers hard truth and commentary with a unique blend of clear-headed, gruff analysis and bemused observation. Lest things get too serious, he spices things up with a laugh or two.

Rick comes by his outlook honestly. He grew up in the projects of Cleveland, ducking local gangs while doing paper routes and odd jobs to help feed his family. After high school, he went out on his own, driving 18 wheelers as a proud union member. Nowadays, Rick, a father of three, is on the front lines of the class work every weekday from 3pm-6pm. He feels the calling to spread the word about the desperate needs facing workers, and to make the world a better place for kids growing up in what is becoming an America of rich and poor.

Rick believes somebody has to wake up the American working class to engage in the democratic process, but not in the corporate-funded Tea Party fashion. He has the rough edges and the grit of a Teamster; he’s a street talker, but a street talker with charm.

to run against Limbaugh. Bill Press was in the early morning slot and would often interact with Joe Madison running at the same time on Urban View (they would appear on each other's show). Then Stephanie Miller was on after and then they cut an hour or so from Bill's slot... etc. When Mark Thompson moved to Progress (after Cathy Hughes, CEO of Radio One ceased programming for "The Power", now Urban View), he was put on at 6 pm on Progress. I actually consider "drive time" as 4 - 7 pm (which is the slot that Savage Weiner scored for himself broadcasting out of SF from 1 - 4 PT to appear live at drive time for the east coast).

I originally subscribed to XM radio back in 2007 right as they were merging with Sirius, but got the "XM Everything" and "Best of Sirius" package, and I know there was a big shakeup because for awhile, there were 2 channels (I think "Sirius Left" and XM's "America Left" or similar) that they eventually merged into the one.

Olbermann comes off as too wacky for many people, and Maddow (whom I do enjoy for five or so minutes) is threatening to a lot of men and spends too much time on a given topic.

CNN has much more aesthetically pleasing anchors without descending into the dippy wasteland of Fox bimbos and facemen.

Even for MSNBC, there has to be a nouveau Walter Cronkite out there. They just aren't looking hard enough.

Combined with the network's penchant for prison shows, I cannot help but wonder if it is intentional.

It seems like MSNBC makes little effort to find anchors that present news with an aesthetic that would attract a broader audience.

Not to mention all the other terrible things he's done in his past.
And I'm not the only one here who remembers either.
You're free to buy into his bullshit, but he doesnt deserve his own show. Of course, judging from his ratings, not many people think he does. But His bosses are aware of his past and let him slide.

who is staying/arriving
andrea mitchell greenspan
joe "moderate in his own mind" scarborough
tom roberts (news guy so is pretty neutral)
chuck "i should be working for fox news" Todd
chris "tingle up my leg" matthews
rachel and lawrence we can only hope

who is going/already gone
joy reid ..progressive, strong voice for women and minorities
alex wagner...progressive, strong voice for women and progressive issues
cycle...2 progressives (ari, toure), 1 moderate (crystal), 1 conservative (abby)
ED -huge voice for labor and bernie, anti tpp, anti keystone xl

hmmm so they are clearing out the strong progressive voices who support bernie and his values and keeping or bringing in corporate mouthpieces for the gop wack agenda

can't imagine what they might be thinking....

edited to add: i am done with m$nbc. they took off the only voices really moving the progressive causes and are bringing in the gop shills. i had already stopped matthews after he had joan "i pose as a journalist but support hillary" walsh. now they targeted ed. bye bye hope your ratings plunge even further corporate gop hacks...

This very moment was predicted a couple of years back - when MSNBC was "absorbed" Of course, we DO have FSTV and TYT and DP and others for lifelines. Let's see what's left once the dust settles. As much as I fell for Olbermann's time on Countdown, his Prima Donna persona makes me wary of his coming back to politics TV.

No real confirmed word on Keith will come till he wraps up his ESPN show tomorrow.

But it sure looks like Keith time may be close.

As for Ed, I don't dislike him but Thom Hartmann is more to my taste, I would like to see Thom get one of those opening slots as well.

Agree that Maddow goes to long on opening story. Will not watch Todd. Argh.

The repeat of the same stories has forced me to watch StarTrek a lot recently!! Who can stomach that many stories on Trump. Back to BBC and NPR!!!!

I know the network does not care what I think.

Ed was really the only person reporting on working class blue collar concerns on that channel and now he is out? We need to start a petition drive. The dumb fox watchers love to say the MSNBC is just as to the left and Fox is to the right and that's simply not true.

Execs at network town hall meeting also tell staffers Brian Williams doesn’t want his own show
MSNBC president Phil Griffin poured cold water on swirling rumors of a possible Keith Olbermann return Thursday, telling staffers at a town hall that he hasn’t spoken with the former network star.

“They were asked about Keith, and Phil said he hasn’t spoken to him,” a network insider told TheWrap. “Of course (NBC News/MSNBC Chairman Andrew) Lack stayed out of that question.”

Rumors of Olbermann’s return to the network at which he once starred began shortly after the anchor’s recent exit from ESPN, which didn’t renew his contract.

The man is a total fraud - he STILL won't fess up to his full part in the Tawana Brawley case, and he owes something like $6M in back taxes to the Federal government.

Just as Ed starts to introduce him each night I switch to "Three and a Half Men"!

Thu Jul 23, 2015, 07:17 PM

what got ED Shultz in hot water plus having Bernie Sanders on his show several times.
Remember when Obama was defending the TPP and mentioned MSNBC of not having the facts straight. Then Ed came back with "yes Mr. President the facts are correct" and having Union leaders on to talk about the TPP.

That is what I think ended Mr. Shultz's MSNBC stint As the corporate world runs the media show it seems this time they were covering for their corporatist puppet and the puppet won out. Guess one isn't allowed to speak so boldly about corporate sponsored leaders.

I hope they have to pay Ed Shultz big time and I don't think this is last we will see of Shultz

93. Olbermann is not going to MSNBC
Thu Jul 23, 2015, 11:59 PM
Jul 2015

The only 2 organizations he hasn't "burned bridges" are CNN/Time Warner and CBS. Time Warner has a share in MLB baseball, a sports love of KO, and as the election approaches, an open spot @ 9PM ET, and a network focused on the subject. He would also fit between the "hard news" blocks of AC360 and CNN Tonight/Don Lemon. Now you have a show on CNN for about 2 years, and can also do sports w/Turner and ultimately CBS Sports, which I predict will merge with Turner Sports (They already collaborate on NCAA). This will be the first stage of the eventual combination of CBS News and Sports with CNN/Turner. The entertainment division will be separated from this and may ultimately reunite with Viacom. This makes sense for all parties involved.
