A Turkish soldier has been killed by gunfire from across the Syrian border, triggering what was described as the first gunfight between Turkey's army and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants.
A non-commissioned military officer in the province of Kilis, who has not yet been identified, was killed by a gunshot from across Turkey's border with Syria on July 22, Anadolu Agency reported.
According to private broadcaster CNNTürk, the attack continued with more gunfire from the Syrian territory controlled by ISIL and prompted a proportional response by Turkish armed forces.
Two specialized sergeants, Fatih Kurt and Necef Çakmaktepe, were injured in the clash near the 5th Armored Brigade Mountain Border Post. "They were taken to hospital by ambulance, and their health status is fine," Kilis Gov. Süleyman Tapsız said.

(90,061 posts)Turkey will open up Incirlik Air Force Base, about 250 miles from the Syrian city of Raqqa, to U.S. Air Force operations against the Islamic State, according to multiple foreign news outlets. The move puts anti-ISIS coalition aircraft, which had been flying some 1,200 miles to strike Islamic State positions, much closer to the various battlegrounds, including Raqqa, the effective capital of the Islamic State in Syria.
