Sandra Bland Booking Documents, Voicemail Left From Jail Released
Source: ABC7
CHICAGO (WLS) -- The family of 28-year-old Sandra Bland, the Chicago-area woman found hanging in a Texas jail cell on July 13, three days after being arrested, spoke publicly for the first time Wednesday afternoon about newly-released dashcam footage.
The Waller County district attorney released six pages of medical forms Bland filled out after her arrest. In them, Bland checked "no" when asked the question "Are you thinking about killing yourself today?" But on the next line, when asked "Have you ever attempted suicide?", she checked "yes" and wrote in "2014", "lost baby" and "pills."
"We take issue with the notion that she was suffering from depression. She was not clinically diagnosed that this family understands. Everyone goes through hills and valleys," said Cannon Lambert Sr., Bland family attorney.

They have also released a voicemail Sandra left for one of her friends.

(53,661 posts)She was college educated, in the school band, worked with elderly people as a volunteer, had plenty of friends, was loving, very religious and honest about herself. And she as not about to accept being done the way they treated her. They knew they had a tiger by the tail.

(109,021 posts)is that she sustained a serious head injury when they slammed her head against the ground. Remember her saying it had made her deaf?
It's not unusual for an untreated concussion to lead to death days later.
And yet another possibility is that she DID have epilepsy and she needed seizure medication and wasn't getting it while in jail.
They said that she refused medical treatment after they arrested her. That's hard to believe.

(109,021 posts)I have been stopped maybe half a dozen times, but only twice for an actual reason (once I was stopped for exceeding the speed limit and another time I was a day late getting the car re-registered).
At least a couple of times I think I was stopped for driving a beater in my parents' non-beater neighborhood. No explanation -- they just looked at my license and let me go on.

(26,347 posts)I tend to drive around the speed limit personally but it amazes me at times how stupidly fast some of these people drive regardless of sex, age or race I have seen black, white, asian, women, men, young, old all weaving in and out of traffic and speeding like they are rushing to a fire and doing stupid shit like passing me on solid double yellow when I am doing the speed limit on a 55 road for example.

(24,010 posts)After watching that video, I don't believe anything this cold-ass racist murdering police department has to say. The cop in that video was cold. COLD. He deliberately went about creating an incident, deliberately escalated it at every point, tried to drag her from her car when she had done nothing--nothing!--brutally, COLDLY handcuffed her, brutally, COLDLY hurt her in doing so, and brutally, COLDLY put her in jail where she was murdered. And he started concocting his lies in the middle of the incident.
No, no, no! I don't believe anything they say. I don't believe any forms they put forward. I don't believe any reports they concoct. This was coldass murder and the only question in my mind is, how many were involved?
pnwmom
(109,021 posts)That she has epilepsy and that she was taking an epilepsy drug called Keppra.
However, that med was not listed among the items she checked in with.
And they had previously said she refused a check up by the doctor (which I doubt).
So I think they failed to give her her prescribed Keppra and she either died from seizures or from suicidal impulses caused by an abrupt withdrawal from Keppra -- both of which are known effects of sudden withdrawal from the drug.
Either way, they're at fault.
This is a common problem in jails by the way -- not giving inmates their prescription medications.

(891 posts)I watched the livestream today and the DA said when asked that he never asked for a 2nd autopsy. I also saw on MSNBC where the family attorney said that he received a text message from the DA requesting it. So, it's sort of confusing.
Either way, hands-down the family has a wrongful death case.
The DA is still investigating all of this. I had the impression that they were going to do something to the arresting officer, the death is an ongoing investigation.
I"m looking forward to seeing what they come up with. I don't think she belonged in jail for the citation and I don't think she assaulted the cop either from what I saw on the video.
The jail stuff is another thing and I am looking forward to hearing about that part.
I just wish someone could have gotten her out of jail before all this happened.

(4,482 posts)Bland spoke with her sister, Shante Needham, on Saturday, telling her she was injured during the arrest.
"She informed me she had been arrested. She said they couldn't tell her what she had been arrested for until an hour before she had called. She then proceeded to say the officer had put his knees in her back and that she thought her shoulder was broken," said Needham.

(5,866 posts)In it, he outlines a shit-ton of discrepancies and strange things about the case.
Sandra Bland was a threat to them. They stopped the wrong person. She knew her rights and she knew they were overstepping their legal authority all along the way. They even put her in a cell isolated from others. They knew what a threat she was to them. They knew she would take them down when she was released. I believe they killed her. And I think the Justice Department won't ever be able to definitively say that they did, and they'll not face any repercussions for it. And profiling black people will continue unabated.
I'm pessimistic.

(5,586 posts)And they ask you all kinds of medical questions. It doesn't matter if you're there for a couple hours, or until you see a judge. The state is responsible for your care, and your medical needs are a part of that care.
Watch MSNBC nearly any weekend, and you can see this process happen when they're showing Jail.

(53,968 posts)He showed the alleged form from the Texas jail. It a sheet that had a series of checkboxes with hand-written marks on it.
There was no time stamp or any evidence that Sandra Bland checked the boxes herself.
In other words, that form could have been done at anytime, by anyone even after she was killed to bolster the claim that she was suicidal.
Let's don't fall for the okie doke. Those racists killed that woman because she didn't "know her place" and was going to cause them trouble because of the bogus arrest.
cstanleytech
(26,347 posts)If so then they should get some handwriting analysis done on it to make sure its hers.
If its not her handwriting though what about video tape footage of her booking with audio?

(18,124 posts)9 times out of ten, if the "alleged criminal" is POC, they have walked in the last three years of high profile street and jail executions. This is really getting to the point where when I read something about an LEO getting killed, perp guilty or not, I could give a damn less.

(109,021 posts)than on all the others.
This is the form where someone has circled "no" to all the questions, including one asking whether she takes any medications.
(On the suicide assessment form it says that she reported having epilepsy -- as she did on the video -- and said she took Keppra.)
Also, there is a medical records release form that they had her sign -- which says it is necessary for her continuity of care -- IOW, they need her doctor to provide medical records so they know what treatment she might need, including medications. HOWEVER this form doesn't include any doctor's name. It doesn't appear to have been sent to anyone.
It also has her name as Annette (which is her middle name). I thought that was odd.
Page #7 it asks Are you on any medication: NO (what about the Keppra?)
I thought the DA said the autopsy will be available to view by the public tomorrow. I'm not sure what the status is of the families independent one, but I'm pretty sure they will release theirs too.
I guess this is the beginning of what is going to happen. I really do believe something is going to happen to the officer and then the investigation of the jail death. I saw where the media spoke to one of the inmates, but you have to know that there are more than one person in that jail. Maybe we'll get more information as this goes along.
There will be two cases going on. A criminal and a civil. I know the wheels of justice move very slowly.
That DA also said that they are waiting for the rest of the toxicology results and should get within 2-3 weeks. That sounds right to me.
adding: Page 8 has her name as Annette without Sandra on it as well.
