In Dallas, Sanders' Tough Talk Fires up Thousands
Source: The Texas Tribune
DALLAS- U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent running for president as a Democrat, rallied thousands of Texans here late Sunday afternoon with a progressive clarion call that included some tough talk for Democratic opponents who may be overlooking solidly red Texas in their campaign calculus.
"One of the problems that exists in American politics today, in my view, is that the Democratic Party has conceded half the states in the country at the national level, and that's wrong," Sanders told a raucous crowd inside a downtown hotel ballroom. "We've got to fight them in 50 states including Texas." "If we are serious about change in America, we can't just do it in blue states," he later added emphasizing the need for Democrats to have a "50-state strategy" to win the White House.
Organizers estimate the rally drew more than 7,000 people though a more official count was expected later in the day. In any case, the event appeared to be the largest held by any presidential candidate in Texas so far for this election cycle.
Sanders, who has emerged as the most popular alternative to front-runner Hillary Clinton, won loud applause for touting a host of items on liberals' wish list, including a $15 minimum wage, higher taxes for the wealthy and a constitutional amendment overturning the Citizens United decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that gave rise to a new era of campaign finance.
Sanders was scheduled to headline another rally Sunday evening in Houston.

(67,782 posts)....campaign, not 2008.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)Heck, the DNC was running a 50-state strategy in 2008 and she didn't.
It's not like we're talking about decades of time passing. Deeply-held beliefs should not change that quickly.

(1,890 posts)moving to the left, not even by a micron. If she ends up at the White House you'll see a big bounce back to where she have always stood, center right, at best.

Dean, however, largely ignored Emanuel, and the former governor got the last laugh when the 50-state strategy proved effective Democrats rode a wave to the congressional majority in 2006 and fared even better in 2008, thanks in part to the Obama campaigns embrace of a very similar strategy.

(5,128 posts)You have been showing up in most of the Dallas threads about today in Dallas questioning numbers in attendance because no hotel is that big.
You seem to be posting everywhere in a disparaging way. Not calling you out, just curious.
Why??
All of our candidate' s doing well should be a good thing, right?

(3,059 posts)I remember when Howard Dean basically took on Emanuel with this. Aside from his insistence that Democrats would only be successful by being "Republican Lite", Emanuel also felt they needed to only worry about certain states. The 50 state strategy worked then and it'll work again.

So he is taking it to every state - red or blue.
Almost 12,000 in Phoenix, now almost 8,000 in Dallas, and I am not sure yet what the turn out is in Houston, but his campaign plan is working very well.
Clinton did a safe Dem Party event (that still cost you an arm & leg to attend) in Arkansas this weekend while Sanders kicked ass in the Southwest.

(11,112 posts)No need to run his words through a nuance meter on his way to an event. No need to hire Frank Luntz and ask him hook up 237 people to an electrified emotion recorder. No need to backpedal. No need to modify. No need to pretend. No need to say one thing to group A and another thing to group B. No need to hire handlers like Lanny Davis. Best of all, Bernie doesn`t have to move to the left, move to the right or move to the center based on which group he`s speaking to. He`s the same all the time, no matter what and no matter who.
The real deal and a giant breath of fresh air.

(12,882 posts)Those vying for the Oval Office have to be IN AWE at the dynamic - TOTALLY new way of campaigning that Sanders is demonstrating here. The Dems and the Thugs all hoping to have a chance must be in SHOCK!!! Just IMAGINE the audacity of talking TO - FOR - and ABOUT the 99%. This as opposed to the usual contortionists stances of those trying SO HARD not to step on the toes of their BIG BUCKS financiers! LOL!!!
Personally, I LOVE this guy His stump speeches are music to my ears! Hats off to the first honest White House contender in AGES!

(41,187 posts)BarnBerner speech was posted on the Front Page yesterday in 'Video'. Here's the link to watch, it's a close up version of Bernie speaking at the podium, he's riveting! There is HOPE for the South! and all the US! People have had enough and are inspired and motivated by Bernie! He'll be in NEW ORLEANS July 26, can't wait!
On July 9, I attended a Public Policy Forum (not a campaign rally) where Bernie was the main speaker. Similar 45 min. speech, then Q & A w/ the audience, Town Hall style in an auditorium w/ 500 people. Amazing and I've followed him for several years, have seen others. Incredible, encouraging and the presence he has in a room, and the strength of his message and voice I was unprepared for. Blown away, and high naturally afterwards for 3 days!

There were at least 3 OPs with the DALLAS video posted yesterday. It was a fabulous speech and super event with 8,000 attending. The *HOUSTON speech Bernie gave afterwards last night is on the Front Page now. Sanders sweeping the South!
Next up- Bernie will be in *NEW ORLEANS July 26.
