S.F. deputies union ties pier killing to sheriff’s order

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

The union representing San Francisco sheriff’s deputies filed a formal complaint against Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, linking the Pier 14 killing of Kathryn Steinle to a March order that barred them from communicating with federal immigration agents, according to documents obtained by The Chronicle.

The murder arrest of a man whom deputies had freed from jail despite a felony record and a history of deportations showed that Mirkarimi’s policy “recklessly compromises the safety of sworn personnel, citizens, and those who merely come to visit the San Francisco area,” the deputies wrote in the grievance.

The San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association called for Mirkarimi to correct his “flawed philosophy” and rescind the March 13 memo prohibiting his staff from giving immigration agents information about detainees — including their citizenship status, their booking and arrest documents, and their release dates.

Mirkarimi has to go, NOW. I don't care if he resigns, is terminated by the board of supervisors, or is voted out this November.

1. Board of Supes can't fire him, he was elected

They might be able to vote to simply de-fund his position although I think there are some provisions in the CA constitution about that since he is also the jailer.

I seem to remember in one of the cow counties where the board got into a major pissing contest with the sheriff and eliminated any salary for him from the departmental budget. He sued and won although I'm not sure on what grounds.

As much as I hate to agree with any Deputy Sheriffs union, I have to concur this was a serious screwup. He needs to go before he costs the city bazillions of dollars in lawsuits.

3. Mirkarimi did the right thing by not bowing to the demands of xenophobic racists

I'm surprised a union in San Francisco would appeal to RW racist fox news types by trying to throw the sheriff under the bus over this.

6. So everyone has an equal right to take advantage of living in a sanctuary city?

Does an undocumented felon with gang ties have an equal right to live here as an undocumented resident who simply goes about their life? San Francisco also "stood up" for a delinquent associated with the MS-13 gang after he beat up a pregnant woman in front of a bus full of passengers. In return for the privileged, he murdered a man and his two sons thinking they were rival gang members. I THINK any city should exercise judgement about whom should be able to live here under the protection of Sanctuary City statues.

8. I would say yes they have the same rights, if the person is a NON VIOLENT "Felon"

IMO, border crossing should be a misdemeanor charge and then fly them back to their home country, if the courts can't find a reason to allow them to stay.

but of course because ALEC or whoever RW? wanted to be sure those Mexican border crossers were 'punished' with decades in 'for profit' prisons, border crossing, "be in the USA without paper"- was made a Felony.

Mirkarimi can pick and choose which federal laws to enforce or follow, why should right wing states follow any federal laws they disagree with like ACA, gay marriage, ect?
The guy wasn't supposed to be in the country, but came anyway. If he's here to work, that's fine. He's just like a million of other undocumented immigrants leaving a bad situation in Mexico.
But he was heavily involved in the drug trade. Rightly or wrongly, drugs like that are illegal in this country. So he doesn't respect our immigration laws and comes across the border illegally, violates federal and state laws against drugs. He's the uninvited guest at a party that shits on the carpet and burns the couch. He doesn't deserve any sympathy. He deserves to be in prison until he's 80, then dropped in the southern part of Mexico.
It's not xenophobic. It's requesting people respect our laws, especially if they aren't supposed to be here. I'm not going to sneak into Saudi arabia and have my wife drive me out to get a bacon wrapped ham while reading a copy of The Satanic Verses.

7. Feds can make law, leave a gun in the glovebox to be stolen another 'non-violent' FELONY
Fri Jul 17, 2015, 03:21 AM
Jul 2015

Then the circle will be complete. 'For profit' prisons will have more non-violent FELONS to lock-up for decades and earn more billions in federal & state taxpayer money.

The felon border crosser got his hands on a gun because cars are broken into all the time and some dumbass, BLM federal employee, leaves a gun in their car.

The gun he used to shoot and kill the victim a few weeks ago is the same gun he stole from the car.

12. They traced the gun. The gun was left in a car by a BLM employee. Where did you read the shooter
Fri Jul 17, 2015, 10:26 AM

was the one who broke into the car and stole the gun.

I also read, They have witnesses on the crowded pier, the shooter picked up a teeshirt bundle left alone on the ground and 2 shots rang out, he quickly tossed the bundle/gun off the pier but police recovered the gun.

That's why I said make leaving a gun unattended in a car, a felony charge. Because cars are broken into all the time.
