LOS ANGELES (AP) Caitlyn Jenner accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs on Wednesday night while urging acceptance for others who are transgender.
She received a standing ovation from some of the sporting world's biggest stars after her 10-minute speech during the annual awards honoring the year's top athletes and moments.
"This transition has been harder on me than anything I can imagine," said Jenner, who revealed she was in the process of becoming a woman in a televised interview with Diane Sawyer in April on ABC.
From the stage, Jenner thanked Sawyer, whom she called a friend.

(9,426 posts)So, the transition is complete. Good for her. Now please go live privately. Oh, no, every move she makes if being filmed for a reality show. I for one, have had enough of the Kardasian/Jenner debacle. I heve never watched an episode, but they are written about on every blog it seems. Please do not encourage these money hungry fame seekers by giving them space on THIS blog.

You are free to hide thread, but to many of us this is an important story.
IF the day comes when Jenner or any Kardasian HELPS others, that will be a good day. They are mindlessly self promoting, and this is how Jenner is. I knew a young man who went through transgender surgery, and he worked almost every day, faced others who insulted him, did it without millions of $$$ or a TV show. He was brave, this was many years ago. Jenner is surrounded by TV crews with cameras, nobody could get close enough to harm him if anyone wanted to. He is making millions from this, and reportedly is turning into quite a diva. I ubderstand your point, but really, enough Jenner.

(12,296 posts)Not only because of the fame and money, but the standard it sets for so many who are transitioning that "cover model / cougar" is what they should look like, when we know in reality that much of the journey is more akin to that of Moira Pefferman in Transparent.

(5,842 posts)It appears that the "cover model/cougar" image should be credited to Liebovitz's work as a photographer and a lot of photo-shopping vs. Jenner's doctor's skill at plastic surgery.

(11,014 posts)This is almost like a billionnaire who lives like a homeless person for a week and then writes a book which is turned into a movie. It does nothing for the plight of the homeless people instead of romanticizing their struggle. It gives the billionnaire fame and more money (some of which he donates to a homeless charity for publicity.)
I am sure there are real transgender people out there who actually struggle through their transformation emotionally, socially and financially, facing obstacles each day and overcoming them with far more courage than this celebrity attention hog.

(1,807 posts)I'm am sure there are plenty of unknown high school or college athletes who are going through similar transitions without the benefit of a supportive family, without lucrative media deals, and without multi-million dollar cushions to fall back upon.
They should get some the same level of understanding and support as Bruce / Caitlyn.

(2,062 posts)Sorry, but I feel this was a sham of an award winner. I am very liberal for causes, I have supported the seniors, poor, LGBT, and many others, but this was just a celebrity showing. Are you going to tell me there are not more deserving of the courage award? Yes I know, I will hear the against my post posts

(65,361 posts)Even if everyone agrees it's admirable, potentially supportive and inspirational for Jenner to do this in public, how is it courageous?
Two reasons why i have issue with it:
1) As others have said, lots of money, lots of attention, the insulation of wealth and fame.
2) She said she was lonely, despondent, and miserable as a man. So, it took courage to make one's self feel better?
Remember, i have no debate on whether this is a good thing. I just don't see how this is more courageous than a young woman battling brain cancer who kept pursuing a dream despite NOTHING being in her favor.

(28,581 posts)she put everything on the line. Family, relationships, friendships, career, reputation, everything. If you don't think it takes courage to come out as Transgender in this society, especially in the public eye, then I don't even know where to start a conversation with you.
It's not about feeling better, it's about being able to be who you truly are in a culture that tells you it is shameful.

(15,224 posts)I wasn't able to watch the Diane Sawyer special, so this was my first time watching Caitlyn Jenner speak.
I was pleasantly surprised and impressed, not only with the physical transformation but also the content of what she said. While I'm also really tired of all of the Kardashian drama on television, for this one acceptance speech, I thought it was very inspiring.
And I will admit - I cried along with her when she spoke about her family.

(7,596 posts)They're vapid, attention-seeking fame whores who care about nothing other than getting their faces on TV, in the news, on magazine covers, etc. I know transgender people need someone they can look up to but they could do a hell of a lot better than Caitlyn Jenner.
Jenner hasn't done anything notable in the world of sports in almost 40 years. This award was a joke.
