Scott Walker backs off on supporting Boy Scouts' ban on gay leaders

Source: The Capital Times

11 hours ago • By Jessie Opoien

..............In February 2013, Walker declined to say whether the Boy Scouts of America should lift its ban on gay troop leaders and employees. He said the topic never came up when he was in Scouts, and he didn't want to weigh in on a private organization's policies..................

But on Tuesday, asked about the Boy Scouts' vote to lift the ban, now-presidential candidate Walker told the conservative website IJ Review he "support(s) the previous membership policy because it protected children and advanced Scout values."

LGBT rights advocates, including Rep. Mark Pocan and the Human Rights Campaign, called on Walker to renounce his statement.

...............By Wednesday, Walker had circled back to his 2012 position.

"When asked about gay leaders in the Boy Scouts, Scott Walker repeatedly tells reporters that it’s a decision best left to the Boy Scouts," the Washington Post's Jenna Johnson tweeted from a Walker event in South Carolina.................

I don't know what I think.

I will have to consult the Koch brothers.

They will tell me what my position is.

I would just like to keep saying this, ad infinitum. I apologize if I am cluttering up your post, but damn that feels good. "Scott Walker is a national disgrace." It just has a ring to it.

I think I will write this in any post related to him, wherever I happen to be on the interwebs. (With all due apologies for national disgraces who are NOT Scott Walker, of course. Dick Cheney, I'm looking at you.)

You Misunderstood Scott Walker's Stance on Gay Boy Scouts, Says Walker

Gov. Scott Walker said on Wednesday that he doesn’t think children need to be protected from gay scoutmasters — he thinks they need to be protected from the debate surrounding the ban on gay scoutmasters. Obviously!

In an interview one day earlier, Walker said he supported the “previous membership policy” (read: ban on gay leaders) because “it protected children and advanced Scout values.” He then clarified his remark in a press conference this afternoon:

“The protection was not a physical protection,” he said. Instead, the ban was about “protecting them from being involved in the very thing you’re talking about right now, the political and media discussion about it, instead of just focusing on what Scouts is about, which is about camping and citizenship and things of that nature.”...............
