Southern California beaches tested for tar balls after spill

Source: AP

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Officials coordinating the cleanup of an oil spill on the Santa Barbara coast in May say they are still checking to see if tar balls are washing up on Southern California beaches.

Cleanup commanders said Saturday that they sampled beaches nearby and as far away as Newport Beach in Orange County to see if oil from the spill was continuing to wash up.

The Plains All American Pipeline ruptured May 19 and spilled up to 101,000 gallons of crude oil.

The beaches were always brown, from previous oil spills... Those beaches have been ruined forever. I can remember coming home from the beach and peeling tar off the bottom of my feet and sandals. The better beach was in Ventura, and it was pristine.

tar balls on the beach.

Ventura: You can see the difference.
