Unions back oil export bill, break with AFL-CIO

Two labor unions came out Wednesday in support of a House bill to end the ban on oil exports, breaking with the countrys largest union federation.
The Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA) and the International Union of Operating Engineers signed onto a letter with 20 business and industry groups supporting Rep. Joe Bartons (R-Texas) bill to open the United Statess crude oil market to the world for the first time in 40 years.
Opening global markets to U.S. producers will support added domestic production that will create hundreds of thousands of new jobs and contribute tens of billions of GDP dollars in the supply chain within the next few years, the groups wrote to leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
At the same time, we will put downward pressure on domestic fuel prices, while we provide our allies and trading partners with an alternative to sourcing energy from unfriendly and unstable sources, they said.

(17,301 posts)Like when Raygun got the Air Traffic Controllers to support him by writing a letter saying if they went on strike, he would NOT fire them. Then he immediately turned around and fired them.
Or like when the Police Officer's Unions supported Scott Walker and now Walker wants a 7 day work week for everyone without overtime.
"We must hang together, gentlemen...else, we shall most assuredly hang separately."
Each union will eventually be hanged separately. The RepubliCONS have hanged all but a few remaining now and the unions still fall for their traps.

(20,228 posts)By allowing exports, they are effectively increasing demand. Why sell oil in the US for a lower price when they can sell it to China or India at a higher price?
Of course, higher gas prices trickles down to other things like higher food prices.
There is a silver lining though. Higher gasoline prices push more people to switch to public transportation or hybrid/electric cars. It encourages the development of biofuels using waste instead of grain. Assuming they will also allow the export of liquid natural gas, it could encourage the use of wind and solar for electricity. Basically, higher fuel prices can force us to become more like Europe!
