Conrad Black released from prison

Former Daily Telegraph owner Conrad Black has been released from prison in the US after serving about three years for defrauding investors and obstruction of justice.
The 67-year-old Canadian-born British citizen and peer, who famously threw a $42,000 birthday for his wife and is said to have told investors, "I can have a 747 if I want", was released from a low-security federal prison in Miami on Friday.
Black, whose media empire once included the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph, Chicago-Sun Times and Jersusalem Post, was immediately taken into custody by US immigration officials and now faces deportation.
He has stated his intention to return to Canada and regain the citizenship he renounced in 2001 when the government blocked him from accepting his peerage as Lord Black of Crossharbour. His criminal record, however, will mean he will have to wait at least five years to do so. Black has been granted a one-year temporary resident's permit by the Canadian government.

(185 posts)live by a different set of rule this vile p.o.s. is allowed to return to a country where he renounced his citizenship meanwhile NDP leader Tom Mulcair accused the Tories of having a double standard, citing their past treatment of Gary Freeman.
An American citizen, Freeman lived in Canada for 40 years with his wife and four children, before he was deemed inadmissible due to an incident that landed him in American jail in the 1960s.
Its a clear case of a double standard, one for an American black man from Chicago another for a British white man coming out of federal penitentiary in Chicago, Mulcair said.

(5,729 posts)Under a special permit he can come back to Canada for a year thanks to his buddies in the Conservative party. He gave up his Canadian citizenship when he took his British titles. Now he wants to come back home. I can't recall another convicted felon who isn't a citizen ever allowed such a sweetheart deal to come into the country. It makes me sick.
