South Carolina church fire: Mt. Zion AME burns in Greeleyville

(CNN)A fire broke out at the Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Greeleyville, South Carolina, on Tuesday. Up to 50 firefighters fought to extinguish the blaze, a fire official said.

As yet, authorities do not know what caused it, said Williamsburg County Fire Chief Randy Swinton.

The local sheriff, local police and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division have also responded to the fire at the traditionally black church.

The FBI and five agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also investigating, said ATF Special Agent Tom Mangan.

This is the eighth black church to go up in flames. However, based on the weather at the time, there is a possibility that this fire was caused by lightning. - per Good Morning America.

on the screen and there appeared that there was a heck of a lot of lightning - but IMO this is too much of a "coincidence". The perps could have realized they could use the weather as a cover.

I think that it is one of the neat parts of the south, there are these congregations all over, small churches tucked in the woods and some larger churches as well and they all are symbols of a southern culture.

Sunday drives through the south produce these scenes of these churches with everyone dressed up so fancy, suits and nice dresses and they gather for their worship services which everyone should attend just once, the atmosphere is incredible regardless of how religious you are.

If these fires are arson which I suspect this many are, I hope they catch the SOB's who are doing it and charge them as hate crimes.
