Marijuana is legal in Oregon -- to possess and grow, but not to buy

Source: Oregonlive.com

As of today, if you are 21 or older, you can legally possess and grow cannabis in Oregon. That's right, a pretty historic day.

If you want to mark the day by buying some pot to consume, you're out of luck. For now, people can only share or give away marijuana and starter plants so you'll have to hit up a generous friend, though a bill allowing recreational marijuana sales at dispensaries in the fall is making its way through the Oregon Legislature.

Medical marijuana patients, meanwhile, can continue to purchase cannabis at state-regulated dispensaries. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission isn't expected to launch the recreational marijuana industry until late 2016.

Got questions about the new law and what it means for you? Check out our Q&As...............

Even when pot is fully legal in both states, it will still be illegal to take pot across state lines, and you can bet there will be cops on both sides trying to raise their arrest quotas going after those that don't realize this.

By allowing ample home grow and personal possession in transit, it basically kills off most of the black market. You don't want to pay taxes retail, then go hang out at uncle Dave's house. Ingenious. By knowingly giving up a relatively small margin of the potential tax short term, which is already lower than the other legal states, they empower and legitimatize the retail scheme and secure greater tax haul long term. There is no comfortable place for the black market to reside.
I only wish Oregon allowed consumption in public. If one can smoke a cigarette 20 feet from a public building or drink a beer at a sidewalk eatery, you should be able to vape at the same establishment outdoors. That's what I hope CA allows when their measure goes live next year ...

of the other states have done. If I could grow my own, I'd save a lot of money. Even a person who doesn't have a place to grow it could get a friend to grow some plants for them. Grow it everywhere and share seeds, I say.

keeps the tobacco companies from eventually trying to take a piece of the market (you know they want to), and puts the squeeze on the existing drug trade.

If you have a Medical license in another state, would you be able to buy it in another state? Probably no, right?

you have to go single file while you get sniffed. They never say what they are looking for. No idea if they sniff checked luggage.

Thanks for the heads up. Had been thinking of flying to Denver next year for my HS reunion, but guess I'll take a pass on that. Not that I'd have any pot on me, but the idea of getting dog-sniffed going through security gives me chills. Who knows, though, now that pot is legal in Oregon, it could be happening at PDX even as we speak. Grew up in Colorado, really miss it sometimes, but lately, not so much. Do like the state song, though--Where the Columbines Grow. Brings back nice memories!

so I imagine they will not let you fly out of state with it. But don't take my word for it, I don't know, am just thinking that anytime something crosses any state line it gives the Feds jurisdiction.

In Colorado, when the TSA finds cannabis in people's luggage, they turn it over to local Law Enforcement who just disposes of it. I personally wouldn't do this. Would just seem to be asking for trouble. Using in the air would probably be a Federal violation. However, how the heck would they know if you had a bag of THC laced gummie bears without testing it?
