Top Mormon leaders sending letter to members, reaffirming God's law against same-sex marriage

Source: Salt Lake Tribune

In a letter to be shared with rank-and-file Mormons in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's legalization of gay marriage across the nation, top LDS leaders are reaffirming the faith's steadfast belief in — and exclusive commitment to — heterosexual unions.

"Marriage between a man and a woman was instituted by God," reads the letter from the Utah-based church's governing First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, "and is central to his plan for his children and for the well-being of society." ... The letter instructs local lay leaders "to meet with all adults, young men and young women on either July 5 or July 12 in a setting other than sacrament meeting and read to them the entire statement."

... No matter what civil authorities in the U.S. or other countries dictate, Mormon officials "will not employ their ecclesiastical authority to perform marriages between two people of the same sex," the letter says, "and the church does not permit its meetinghouses or other properties to be used for ceremonies, receptions or other activities associated with same-sex marriages."

... At the same time, the highest-level LDS leaders urge Mormons "to love and treat all people with kindness and civility — even when we disagree." "We affirm that those who avail themselves of laws or court rulings authorizing same-sex marriage should not be treated disrespectfully," the letter states.

They said they would not allow LDS facilities to be used for same sex wedding and receptions.
That's certainly within their right
The letter also states
Mormon officials "will not employ their ecclesiastical authority to perform marriages between two people of the same sex,"
Ecclesiastical authority refers to their religious functions, meaning they won't perform Church weddings for same sex
Nowhere in the article does it say that the LDS Church advocate for county clerks to refuse to provide licenses

The Mormon church is just reiterating church beliefs/rules for their members. The government cannot compel a church to change beliefs. This is a core feature of the First Amendment.

LDS Church seems to be big on letters
It was at the time Lotteries were first becoming a big deal and they would talk about some new letter that had been put out reminding its members not to participate because it was gambling
I remember them talking about three different letters during the season (1987)
They also talked about other letters about the 'concern of the week'.
I think it's just the way their bureaucracy works

The religious institutions that are all about power and control are not responding well to the increase in freedoms and expressions of unauthorized love.

These are the people and institutions that Jesus warned about. False prophets and money lenders defiling the temples of God.

So your kindness is required but understand you don't have to mean it...cause we are so self righteous and we are better than everyone else - don't be disrespectful - even though you are...pishtaw...so in other words - lie - don't be truthful...

Sorry! Ain't gonna fly with me -

People in the religion choose to be there. If their God hates them for being gay or accepting gays, it's time to find a new God.

The God of this Earth is only responsible for this planet. Other planets have other gods, and if you are a good Mormon, you may get to be the god of your own planet, too, when you die.

It's not clear who exactly is responsible for things like star birth nebula clusters and cosmic dust.
