KapStone, union reach tentative deal

KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp. and its paper union have reached a tentative contract agreement, union officials said Thursday night.
The tentative deal, hammered out after 10 months of often contentious talks that appeared headed toward an impasse, emerged from a bargaining session Thursday afternoon, union officials said.
KapStone made a revised contract proposal that includes a Kaiser Permanente insurance option as well as a company health care plan, said Greg Pallesen, vice president of the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers.
He believed it was an improvement from health plans offered in earlier proposals. He declined to go into further detail because the 800 or so members of Local 153 have not been briefed on the deal.
