Source: Democrat & Chronicle

Never buy frozen spinach, however. Why would one?
Just get the real thing. It cooks in 9.347 seconds.

Pickers' hands? Workers should have access to soap, water and decent toilets.

12. Probably not. More likely wild animal waste in fields.

That is what was suspected when there was an outbreak of e coli several years ago on Earthbound organic spinach. Wild pig waste was found in the fields. The spinach gets washed during and after harvest but the problem is that washing does not remove all of the bacteria on the leaf surface.

Large growers have to be certified in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) which includes providing sanitation and hand washing facilities as well as training for workers.

Listeria counts can be reduced by cooking, but it depends on temperature and time. High temperatures over a long time will do it, but lower temperatures and shorter times may not.
