Fire kills 7 children at home in New York

Source: CNN.com

(CNN)A house fire killed seven children in Brooklyn, New York, early Saturday morning, police said.

In addition to the children, a woman and a teenage girl were injured in the fire in Brooklyn's south-central Midwood section, the New York Police Department said.

The victims are believed to be related, police said.

The fire burned the first and second floors of the home, located about three blocks south of Brooklyn College, the New York Fire Department said on Twitter. The flames, reported after midnight, were under control before 1:30 a.m., the fire department said.

More than 100 firefighters went to the site, CNN affiliate NY1 reported.

Smoke detectors .... a sad reminder.

I was saved from a stupid kitchen fire by my smoke
detector just the other day.

5. That is so sad. A smoke detector woke my son the night of our house fire.

Our house was an inferno in a matter of minutes. Most of those poor kids
probably died from smoke inhalation and may never have awakened.

old home in CT that caught fire at night before the Christmas holidays where all the young children upstairs perished. The owner, a female business executive was renovating the property with the help of a contractor who was living with her. They both survived. Haven't heard any more about this tragic story.

She broke up with that contractor, IIRC, and she claims that she hears her children talk to her, and that she's managed to find a way to cope. I can find an update if you wish, but just for what it's worth. Peace.

11. Good to hear she's found a way to cope esp. with a personal tragedy of that level.

I can see how the woman would be a guest of Oprah who's a compassionate and skilled interviewer. Sometime I'll look into this online. Appreciate the info. Take care.

The family apparently had been trying to keep food warm with a "hot plate" device, and an unspecified malfunction happened, Nigro said.

Nigro was asked why food was being warmed overnight.

"I believe it's the Sabbath, and people keep food warm that way. They don't have to operate a stove," Nigro answered.

Heart-wrenching.

Don't let their lives be lost in vain. Make sure you have working smoke detectors on every level of your home.

96% of homes in the USA have smoke alarms.

77% of these homes have at least 1 working smoke alarm.

28% of homes that have reported fires are in the 4% of homes that do not have any smoke alarm.

There are roughly 2600 dwelling fire deaths each year in the US.

Almost 70% of those deaths are in the 4% of homes that do not have any smoke alarms.

I did a college level research paper on this topic.
