Sources: Rand Paul to enter GOP presidential field April 7
Source: MSNBC
Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul is expected to announce plans to join the partys 2016 presidential field on April 7, multiple sources inside Pauls camp told msnbc on Tuesday. The announcement, scheduled to take place in Louisville, Kentucky, will serve as the official campaign launch for Paul, who has spent months traveling to early voting states to assess whether his largely libertarian message will catch fire with the partys conservative base.
This will be an official announcement, not an exploratory committee, said a source close to Paul who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss his plans. Everything will happen pretty quickly over the next couple of weeks, another source close to Paul told msnbc.
Doug Stafford, executive director at RandPAC, Pauls political action committee, had no comment.

(5,082 posts)She needs to get ahead of him on Cannabis legalization and criminal justice reform. Letting a Republican steal that issue would be pathetic. But I expect little from our own corporate sell-out. If Rand gets the nod then we could be in trouble sacrificing the Anti-Nepotism advantage. Although his father is in politics it's not the same as Bush or Clinton.

(11,589 posts)I can't remember where I heard or read it but I was under the impression that he would have to abdicate his Senate seat to run for President. I also recall that he was trying to get that rule changed so if he lost he could still remain senator.
Can anyone help me on this?

The odds of a political disaster appear to be small, but its enough of a cause for concern that McConnell and his confidants have engaged in extensive private discussions with Paul to avoid the doomsday scenario. McConnell has privately suggested that Paul initiate a lawsuit to immediately clarify whether he can pursue both offices, an action Paul resisted because of the cost of such a suit. The two have discussed whether a placeholder Senate candidate could file for office, in the event Pauls presidential bid were to take off, though pulling that off would be tricky.
Oh this could be interesting.
