WASHINGTON (AP) The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee says that so far, no Democrat in Congress has thrown support behind President Barack Obama's proposal for new war powers to fight Islamic State militants.
The White House must reconcile demands from Democrats who don't want another ground war with the concerns of Republicans who want that option left open.
Legislation will set up the first war vote in Congress in 13 years.
Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee said at a hearing on Wednesday that Obama's proposal has some limitations in terms of duration and the extent of military force that can be used.

(26,549 posts)Yeah, keeping the AUMF passed after 9/11 that lets the president wage war anywhere on the planet with no expiration date is totally going to rein in wars.
I don't think they need a new authorization.

(26,549 posts)I wonder if it's Obama's way of getting the old authorization off the books.

(20,882 posts)I am sick of all of these damned wars, sick of them. Can't Mr. President find something else to do like care for America and its people? Seems not -- Venezuela one day, Iran the next day and ISIS et al. after that.
When will WAR ever end?
I for one am sick of it and sick of those that support it.

If you want to stop the wars, you want this to pass. It repeals the 9/11 AUMF, has an expiration date and much tighter restrictions on where the fighting can occur. It starts reining in the ability of the executive branch to wage endless wars.

Disgusting and deceptive piece of legislation as they all are.

(26,549 posts)The authorization in this bill is time-limited.
Leaving the AUMF in force gives you wars without end.
