Fioretti, like Wilson, retracts election-eve promise to endorse Garcia

Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd) on Tuesday became the second vanquished mayoral challenger to retract his election eve promise to endorse Jesus Chuy Garcia in the April 7 runoff and held open the possibility of endorsing Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Fioretti said he has been holding productive meetings with both Garcia and Emanuel and would base his endorsement on the specific financial plans unveiled by both candidates to solve the citys $20 billion pension crisis and the $10 billion in unfunded pension liabilities at the Chicago Public Schools.
Like millionaire businessman Willie Wilson, Fioretti told the Chicago Sun-Times on the eve of the Feb. 24 election that he would support anybody but Rahm if the mayor failed to win the 50 percent-plus-one-vote he needed to avoid Chicagos first every mayoral runoff.
If there is a run-off, I will support whoever the challenger is. We need a change. Chicago is headed in the wrong direction under this mayor, Fioretti said on that day. Like Wilson, Fioretti is now retracting that statement after behind-the-scenes negotiations with both candidates and holding open the possibility of endorsing Emanuel, a candidate he pummeled repeatedly during Round One.
