EAST CHICAGO -- Bundled-up union workers at Ameristar Casino escalated their contract standoff with casino owner Pinnacle Entertainment during a Wednesday afternoon rally during which they called for a public boycott of the casino.
The union is trying to pressure Pinnacle into preserving union members' current health care benefits, for which they pay $30 per month for family coverage, and nothing for individual coverage.
"Let's not get discouraged; let's show them we're here to fight," Ameristar beverage server Marina Castillo said to the group of about 150 union members and supporters.
Northwest Indiana Federation of Labor president Dan Murchek said the federation's 52 affiliated members voted unanimously to support a boycott.
