Burma captures 9th rare white elephant

Source: AsianCorrispondent.com

YANGON, Burma/Myanmar (AP) — Burma says it has found a rare, white elephant in the jungles of the western Ayeyarwaddy region.

Forestry official Tun Tun Oo says the 7-year-old female was captured by his department on Friday, a month and a half after it was initially spotted in a forest reserve in Pathein township.

White elephants, actually albinos, have for centuries been revered in Burma, Thailand, Laos and other Asian nations.

Often pinkish in color, with fair eyelashes and toenails, the animals were normally kept and pampered by monarchs as a symbol of royal power and prosperity — and many people still believe they bring good luck to the country.

I have always been awestruck by the sheer size and power of elephants, but their intelligence and social bonds are inspiring.

Please note that the elephants in captivity are CHAINED to the ground and are unable to take any but the smallest step. How hobbling such magnificent animals can be defined as "well kept" is a total mystery to me. If it is necessary for their safety to keep them confined, they should be allowed to wander through a large (albeit enclosed) landscape and free to move as they wish. These animals are intelligent, social beings who would be as frustrated as you or I at being chained in one spot.

"Well kept" my arse! Damn them, damn them all!

I wonder how these "keepers" would like to be chained to the ground?
