Say hello to our new MIR Team!

This discussion thread was locked by Skinner (a host of the Announcements group).

The job of the Malicious Intruder Removal Team is to ban people who join DU with the intent to disrupt. MIR Team members are volunteers, and they serve for a three-month term. The members serving on the current team were selected on a first-come-first-served basis (provided they met the eligibility requirements).

If you are a member of the MIR Team, you should have access to the access-restricted Malicious Intruder Removal Forum. It should appear as a red folder on your Forums & Groups page, and in the left column of any page (if you view DU in "Standard" mode).

Thank you to everyone who volunteered!

Especially those who haven't served on MIRT previously. It's a very interesting part of DU, and performs important services. In my two terms, I learned a great deal and worked with a great group of DUers.

and heed this advice: keep your inbox cleaned out.

when DU3 was first launched MIRT got SO much DUMail it was insane - like hundreds in a 24 hour period (at least it seemed like that) and with some of the improvements/automated functions it became very reasonable. But it seems like this last session, the trolls and intruders really out did themselves. it felt like I was deleting a hell of a lot of messages the last few months!

It astonishes me every time I serve how skilled some people are at sniffing out trouble before it escalates.

By the time I amble by the work is often done.

Some of it is a time zone phenomena, but mostly it's because there are so many very quick, sharp, and intelligent people here on DU.

Best wishes to the new team! The first-timers among you are about to discover how important the job is to DU.

Without MIRT and jury service this place would be full of spam, vile misogyny, racism, homophobia, and the lewd comments of lonely guys drooling over videos of buxom braless women firing big bump stock guns.

My big net and the heavy gloves. Sometimes people try to bring mixed animals into the lounge. Tie your hair back. You need to get them by the back of the neck if you touch one at all. It's best to leave live traps from the Humane Society. Trolls are much the same but worse in may ways, particularly smell.

Many brave catchers and dispellers of trolls have fought bravely Some will leave, some will dispatch on. New mirters, will figure out what I never quite got, about hunting them down, and booting them out. Good luck.

I watched it happen and you guys and gals are good!

Good luck new team.
