(86,009 posts)...then I remembered how organic and amazing the women's march was. It was the largest I've seen, by far, and I've attended quite a number in DC.
I can see us heading for a European-style mass protest that will shock the American political system into order, if Trump makes a serious move to fire Mueller. I feel it in my bones.
RandomAccess
(5,210 posts)general strike, if that's what you're referring to as "European style mass protest."
It also got me thinking about the fact that our leaders in Washington aren't speaking up nearly enough. They should be calling Trump out at every turn, not just the occasional here and there. If a Democrat did a fraction of what Trump is doing, the Republicons wouldn't shut up for a single minute, from morning til night. Our side? ALMOST mute. ALMOST complete silence. What the hell is wrong with them?
FuzzyRabbit
(1,970 posts)You ask "What the hell is wrong with them?"
They have no idea what is going on. Our senators and representatives, even the good ones, spend nearly all their time raising money for their next campaign. They don't talk to their constituents and they don't follow the news.
They have no idea that ICE is raiding churches, hospitals, and courtrooms looking for brown people to deport. They have no idea that ICE is abusing those that they arrest.
They have no idea how many homeless there are. They have no idea that many of the homeless have full time jobs but still cannot afford a place to live.
They have no idea how many people cannot afford to feed themselves.
They have no idea how difficult it is to afford health insurance. They don't have to pay for it so they don't have to think about it.
And when you write to your representative or senator, you get back a ridiculous boilerplate reply that does not address your concern.
I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

How many will actually wake up and decide to sacrifice their personal and party interests for the country. We should keep close track of that and hold the traitors accountable. I say firing squad, but public hanging would satisfy me as well.

(53,410 posts)Malcolm Nance was not the only one there talking Fascism. They all were, and just as strongly as he did.
I truly felt terrified at the end of the show. If you're paying attention the way most DUers do you know we're in very serious trouble because they're already passing bills that will cripple this country. The new taxes and doing away with Net Neutrality are death blows to any people power in this country.
The concerted effort by Fox News and the Republicans suddenly casting doubts and accusations at Mueller is a concerted effort to discredit him in the eyes of the population because the great majority of people don't follow the machinations of the government the way political junkies do.
I'm actively beginning to think about how I will survive in the dystopia they have planned for most of us. The rich, of course won't suffer at all. They will actually thrive. The rest of us will be on the outside of the well guarded gated communities.
It can happen easily.
The police will be their private police. Some of us will serve them as servants and as workers in their companies, but they will pay us what they want which will be an amount that will strip us of any power. Old people like me will just be in the way.
MontanaMama
(23,364 posts)what I have been thinking, especially in light of the tax scam that will pass very soon. I fear we on our way to a police state in our country. The wealthy won't feel it but the rest of us will, acutely. Net Nuetrality was a big blow. Fox is aiding and abetting the effort and there are no laws to stop them. This process has been in the works for years. Most of those in power have been part of the game. I don't think Mueller will get to finish what he started.

(58,785 posts)Anyone who says Trump is dismantling the constitution is lying, a major whopper meant to sucker people by using their ignorance against them. What else are they lying about?
The truth isn't frightening enough without pretending our enormously powerful third branch of government is helpless and our system of checks and balances on the power of all 3 branches nonexistent?
Neither the president nor congress control the Supreme Court. They don't build it and they sure can't "dismantle" it.
As for the rest of the message, honest, knowledgeable, thoughtful people are writing more about this than we'll read in a lifetime.
KitSileya
(4,035 posts)They've already started. It's very simple - having both the White House and Congress, they appoint young justices who *do not think the Constitution is the highest law of the land.* Gorsuch (and to a certain extent Roberts and Alito) are more beholden to religious beliefs and money than the Constitution. If they manage to fill Bader Ginsburg's, Kenedy's, and Breyer's seats, all of whom might very well die within the next 3 years, it is over. Period.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)as our republic. Yet it endures, and even stumbles forward more than it falls back.
As for your worries, we all share them. But did you know that the number of justices is not fixed in our constitution? We haven't changed it for a while, but the kind of emergency envisioned might well cause congress to decide to add justices as a solution that doesn't require constitutional amendment.
KitSileya
(4,035 posts)I know plenty about the Supreme Court, but things aren't the same now as they've been for the past 200+ years. We see it in Congress too. The Republicans have managed to destroy the system because they refuse to play on the field agreed upon. What Karl Rove called alternative reality has been put on steroids. The systems of government in the US depend on both sides actually agreeing on the ground rules, even if they disagree completely on how what to do within these systems. In the last 9 years, that has broken down almost completely. The GOP refuses to cooperate, something the system is predicated upon. Without cooperation across the aisle, Congress doesn't work as intended. And unlike the 1850s, there's no clear geographic divide between those who would harm the Republic and those who want to preserve it
On SCOTUS, we've had horrible justices and great justices, but we've never had justices who do not recognize the Constitution as the highest law of the land before. Whether it is religious law or money law - before the justices have worked within the Constitution to bend it to their will. We are now facing a time when the majority of the Supreme Court will simply disregard the Constitution - they can do it very easily by not hearing cases decided by Trump-appointed lower court judges who set the Constitution aside or willfully break it. SCOTUS won't even have to give their opinions in the more egregious cases, and the law stands for the next 40 years (but we all know that when this happens, the Republic is finished and there will never again be a chance to turn SCOTUS around.)
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Much of our Republican congress is far more corrupted than the media are reporting. The new plutocracy that's grabbed enormous power in this past year is attempting to bankrupt our nation to a point that even if we get control we cannot restore our systems any time soon. They don't intend to let us get control back, which will require breaking our democracy itself if they are to succeed.
But things aren't dire because they're "dismantling" the Supreme Court. That's nonsense and believing nonsense makes us stupid and weak. GIGO.

(9,090 posts)the bulk of the attacks on mueller start with limbaugh and blaming fox is exactly what they want.
the talk radio psyops can be destroyed with a variety of steps and until it is challenged it will continue to make real democracy impossible. we shouldn't fall into the trap thinking that it's something we need to compete with - that's mom and pop vs wall mart.
here are a few free speech things people can do. demanding that our universities stop supporting it may be the best way with minimum effort used to scare off many of their advertisers. whatever the schools actually do is irrelevant - the discussion in public will do it, imo.
to start, dems and media and political scientists need to be encouraged to poll trump support for talk radio. too much analysis ignores the fact that this is actually the talk radio president and most of putins trolling piggybacked it. ill bet it shows the closest association outside of white, and that will help establish it as a major factor.
monitor it should be easier now to automate recording and transcribing the main rw talkers so people can search and study the patterns and repetition. if all of a sudden theres a spike in, say the word iran or mueller or deep state, etc, it probably means something. knowing about it before it becomes reality means not always having to play catch up
credit it trump needs a RUSH tattoo on his forehead, as do all republican pols and media hacks. they all ride the talk radio bandwagon and feed from the daily smorgasbord of talking points and excuses. dems in media could accurately preface answers to republican media hacks and politicians with thats what limbaugh says but...
investigate it how long has putin been using it? did they find a way to feed limbaugh and coordinate with him and others? are any of them being paid freelance money? exposing the talk radio gods as tools, especially russian tools, would help. Trump guy Sam Nunberg analyzed 1000s of hrs of RW radio & reported to Trump in 2014. to coordinate with Russian ops?
thank all local businesses that advertise on RW radio stations thank them for trump, trumpcare, global warming, privatization of public education, voter suppression, deregulation, tax breaks for billionaires, etc. its easy and fun to listen to a few minutes here and there and get a few email addresses for thank-you notes that can get to the boss/owners.
protest it include the radio stations in any progressive protests they may be better places to protest than capitols politicians and media will notice.
and to combine a few of those, push the 88 universities that endorse 257 limbaugh stations to stop crapping on their mission statements and start looking for apolitical alternatives to broadcast sports on maybe their political science faculties and students can start studying the most dominant political factor in the US the last 30 years. people need to wonder why the unis should drop rw radio. it will start a discussion, gop will freak out, media will notice, and advertisers will flee.

(15,393 posts)All the signs point to closure of ways to communicate.
The local police "deciding" that two or more people congregating in any form constitutes a conspiracy and an insurrection. The local prosecutors becoming agents of the police.
The US military being co-opted or forced to live off-shore - probably with an end to support from the motherland. The Dept. of State is already emasculated (sorry, rendered ineffective.) Passports? For people like you and me, don't even consider traveling.
Fuel becoming rationed and travel permits required to use major highways. If you travel on the backroads, be prepared to not come home again.
Well-armed right-wing militia under the direct orders of Fox stations will be able to roam at will. Be prepared to fly a flag of compliance on your front door.
1-888 numbers available to snitch on your enemies and neighbors.

(4,633 posts)If the neo-fascist plan to fire Mueller on 12/22 is true, I would not be surprised to see this site hacked and down just as it was during the election last year.
I wouldnt be surprised if the same happens to many left-of-center forums and blogs. Then, when the internet is returned, it might be with all progressive sites throttled or eliminated via the death of net neutrality. Soon after our ISP will be selling us packaged access per the cable model Foxnews, CNBC, and religious websites for just $19.99 a month. What a deal!!
It behooves us to stockpile information on resist actions now because, come Christmas, it might be harder to find.

(15,393 posts)May try to trip this exercise in democracy up.
I think of the revolutions that have happened in the countries formerly within the Soviet Union and the ones that were under its direct influence (military and economic.) It didn't take much for Pute to send his thugs to various trying-to-be democracies and inciting violence and separatism. I don't think it is inconceivable that local agents and foreign direction could cause a whole lot of damage to this country and to democracy.
We all know how dearly the right-wing really cherishes the main tenent of democracy - one person, one vote.
LenaBaby61
(6,979 posts)Is definitely a start (That's IF he's allowed to), but there won't be enough time for him to get that fat, lying, treasonous pig out of the Oval Office in head of 2018's mid-terms, and especially since you now have a steady drumbeat coming from righties on the radio, Faux Noose and in the CONgress trying to discredit and shut down Robert Mueller's investigations, and even if he survives, do you see this CONgress impeaching tRump? Additionally, the GOP is not being stopped from voter-suppressing (voter cross-checking, voter-purging), and voter ID laws are being expanded as yet another way to stop Dems of all stripes from voting. Also, we have that ruling coming down from a 5-4 right-winged Supreme Court ahead of 2018 which more than likely will give Wisconsin thuglicans the go ahead to resume gerrymandering in Wisconsin.
Any way you slice it, the voting apparatus for Dems across this country has improved only slightly since 2016. Also, Whose mostly collecting and counting votes? I sure as hell don't trust tRump/thuglicans. I understand that we have to fight/protest/resist, but unless his health declines, fatso isn't leaving the White House before 2018. He can't, because he owes so much to his greedy, grifting crime family/friends, benefactors (putin, mobsters, Mercers, Kochs etc.) for helping to get him installed into the White House.

(12,608 posts)The GOP also wants to dismantle the Constitution, they want an authoritarian state as well. They want a police state, have the poor pay taxes while the rich take it easy. They want to get rid of all the non-whites by deportation, or disenfranchisement, draconian solutions, or not allowing them into the country. Get rid of school and have people homeschool their children. They don't like education cause what they want to do is keep the masses ignorant. If they keep schools they must teach nationalism and that's all. Keep women quiet, sexualized, subservient and pregnant. Get rid of gay people. Throw away the sick and elderly. Get rid of health care. Bring back slavery, keep non-whites from voting. Get rid of the rule of law.
