Theological scholar explains horrifying reason Trumps supporters celebrated Armageddon in Pensacola

https://www.rawstory.com/2017/12/theological-scholar-explains-horrifying-reason-trumps-supporters-celebrated-armageddon-in-pensacola/

In a Pensacola, Florida rally Friday evening, Republican state Senator Doug Broxson suggested to supporters of Donald Trump that the president’s controversial decision to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem may usher in the biblical end times.

“Now, I don’t know about you, but when I heard about Jerusalem — where the King of Kings [applause] where our soon coming King is coming back to Jerusalem, it is because President Trump declared Jerusalem to be capital of Israel,” Broxson predicted. The crowd cheered.

This week, theological scholar Dr. Diana Butler Bass wrote a Twitter thread explaining the link between recognition of Jerusalem, evangelical Christians, and the apocalypse. That is important because rebuilding the Temple is the event that will spark the events of the Book of Revelation and the End Times.”

According to Bass, the counsel of evangelical adviser that Trump surrounds himself with take such “End Times” prophecies literally

“Of all the possible theological dog-whistles to his evangelical base, this is the biggest,” she continued. “Trump is reminding them that he is carrying out God’s will to these Last Days. They’ve been waiting for this, praying for this. They want war in the Middle East. The Battle of Armageddon, at which time Jesus Christ will return to the Earth and vanquish all God’s enemies.”

She warned that for some evangelicals this is considered a “climax of history.”

“And Trump is taking them there. To the promised judgment, to their sure victory. The righteous will be ushered to heaven; the reprobate will be banished to hellfire,” Bass went on. “People believe this. Really believe this. Have given their lives to these ideas, sing about them in their churches, evangelize others, teach them in Sunday schools. And, this morning, with the news of Jerusalem, these people are ecstatic. This is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. And Donald Trump is not only acting on a campaign promise, but enacting a theological one.”

She went on to explain that the reason many white evangelicals supported Trump to the tune of 80 percent is more than an abortion issue. Many actually believe that Trump is unfolding God’s purpose.

“They believe that Donald Trump is God’s instrument to move us closer to the Rapture, the Judgment, and the End,” she wrote. “Because to them, that’s actually the beginning — the beginning of their reward and heavenly bliss.”

with varying degrees of enthusiasm, but many eager for it, last time I read Pew's report on it. If they'd kindly fly away, up and/or down, I'd be looking forward to it with enthusiasm also.

As it is, they're a force. Worse, the dominionist movements have busily infiltrated most mainstream Christian sects so a majority of conservative Christians feel that government would do much better with religious guidance, while that same 30 millions plus more would support a full-blown theocratic dictatorship, masquerading as a democracy or not. Of course, guidance-lite is what Iranian voters were promised and the latter is what they got.

Serious business because the billionaire right is not only working with but overlaps the religious extremists in joint efforts to take over the U.S.

whose faith in Christ is absolutely sincere. They are worshiping the same god. They believe Christ was the only begotten son of that god, that his mother was a virgin, that he performed various miracles, that he was crucified and died and then was resurrected. So, their religious beliefs and yours are probably pretty similar in many respects. Where you part company is in what you do as a result of that faith. Your faith inspires you to do certain things that you might not do otherwise, I imagine. Their faith inspires them to do different things.

Sure, you and some others choose to emphasize different parts. But there is as much hate as love in that book. And even the love is couched in the ‘love me or go to hell’ threat. That threat is scattered all throughout the New Testament.

And do not bother explaining old vs new testament blather. They are all part of the same book and many Christians value the old as much as the new.

I was raised Southern Baptist. They preach all the love stuff in your post. But they do not ignore all the hate stuff either. I guarantee you that many of Moore’s greatest supporters give generously to their church and to the needy in their community. But they are also great haters.

You know the drill: Adam was married to Eve (although “shacking up with” is closer to the truth) and Joseph to Mary, so God only approves of one man-one woman marriages. I do believe those were the only two of those marriages in the Bible. Plural marriage was God’s Way.

It's an important point to illustrate their thinking. Actions can only be bad if God explicitly forbids them. Anything he doesn't forbid is just fine to do. And if God wants something done, it's always good to do it. Which is really fucking scary, because I think a lot of them seriously think of Trump as God's representative or prophet or whatever word you want to use. If he tells them something is God's will, they will believe it, and they will do anything he tells them to do. Anything.

I completely agree that trying to reason with these people is a massive waste of time.

She believes her son is in heaven, even though he never did anything remotely Christian. He didn't even try to appear to others like a Christian. She called the Chaplain in after he went into a coma. That gave her peace.

The flip side is she knows who isn't going to heaven. Sometimes, just be looking at them.

Dec 2017

Judge not!

I was shocked, confused, bewildered
As I entered Heaven's door,
Not by the beauty of it all,
Nor the lights or its decor.

But it was the folks in Heaven
Who made me sputter and gasp--
The thieves, the liars, the sinners,
The alcoholics and the trash.

There stood the kid from seventh grade
Who swiped my lunch money twice.
Next to him was my old neighbor
Who never said anything nice.

Bob, who I always thought
Was rotting away in hell,
Was sitting pretty on cloud nine,
Looking incredibly well.

I nudged St Peter, 'What's the deal?
I would love to hear Your take.
How'd all these sinners get up here?
God must've made a mistake.

'And why is everyone so quiet,
So somber - give me a clue.'
'Hush, child,' He said, 'They're all in shock.
No one thought they'd be seeing you.'

There is a very real chance that Trump could bring about the end times, between all his shit-stirring w/ NK and the ME. It hasn't even been a year yet and I never imagined that he could cause so much destruction in such a short period of time. If he lasts for four years, there is no telling what kind of hell he will bring upon us all.

What scares me is what these true believers will do if they think their mission is being thwarted. There is no telling how far they will go.

May I remind my colleagues of some electoral realities:

1. Modern elections swing on small margins.
2. A winning coalition can include voters from many communities; a few here, a few there.
3. Some evangelicals are waking up to reality; some are even talking about environmental issues.

The end times stuff is based on a very selective reading of scripture, cross-referencing disparate verses written centuries apart. It's as if someone was interpreting a William Shakespeare play in light of a Sam Shepard play.

But remember that James Comey tweet from last week, the one about justice rolling down like waters? That's from the book of Amos, and was a verse favored by Dr. King during the Civil Rights Era. The verses preceding that payoff get overlooked, but I think they're highly appropriate to quote for our friends who are so eager for the Day of the Lord:

18 Woe to you who long
for the day of the Lord!
Why do you long for the day of the Lord?
That day will be darkness, not light.
19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion
only to meet a bear,
as though he entered his house
and rested his hand on the wall
only to have a snake bite him.
20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light—
pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?
21 “I hate, I despise your religious festivals;
your assemblies are a stench to me.
22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings,
I will not accept them.
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,
I will have no regard for them.
23 Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream!"

For some reason, they never seem to think that some of that stern judgment and tribulation is going to be visited on their pointy little noggins.

25. The Anti-Christ or a second King Cyrus of Persia
Sat Dec 9, 2017, 12:36 PM
Dec 2017

A friend of mine who is religious said a lot of people in her community think Trump is the Anti-Christ.

This article in Right Wing Watch quotes prominent Christian leaders comparing him to the Persian King Cyrus who sent his captive Jewish population back to Israel.

My friend's community of religious thinkers is mostly African-American. The Christian leaders quoted in the Right Wing Watch article are mostly White Evangelicals. A few of those, in the past, have floated the idea that it was Obama who was the Anti-Christ.

There are so many ways at looking at all these developments that one would need the eyes of a fly to take it all in.

My take is that it doesn't matter whether any given prophecy about anything is true. People can make a prediction play out with their own actions. Anything that diverges from the prophecy slightly can be artistically re-framed to fit the narrative.

It is true that Kushner owns a building with the prophetic "666" in its address. Few Christian leaders seem to be mentioning this, because it doesn't paint their interpretation of events comfortably.

Here's a little tip: When speaking of the final book of the Christian scriptures, note that its name is "Revelation", singular, not "Revelations", plural. It supports your credibility when discussing the subject, and it really irks a Bible-fiend when they get it wrong and you correct them.

In all seriousness, the hijacking of any religion persists because the majority of said religions are afraid to publicly refute the wackadoodles and nut cases in the public square.

Christians of legitimate faith can't just shrug and pretend the idiot brigade of "evangelicals" are simply delusional...they must be called to account and in no uncertain terms made clear - YOU (the fools) do not represent ME or CHRIST.

Like I said, anything less is tacit approval and ownership worthy...

I can only bring it to some of hierarchy's attention via local shepherd. My head hurts.

Perhaps strong vocal sentiment would have a snow balling effect.

Our priest is ex-evangelical and you would not see or hear a trace or hint.

There are instances when some of a certain Tradition of Faith will not join in ecumenism with others because it's hypocritical.

You want to see some Christians warring against 'others'?

It's a fine line 'we' walk.

There is clarity in the Faith I participate in. Not because Ima proud peacock.

Sat Dec 9, 2017, 02:34 PM

Pensacola has always, for some reason, been a nexus of End Times activity. One of the most extreme Bible colleges is there. Also, when I was stationed in Berlin six fundamentalist soldiers stationed at Field Station Augsburg, Germany, went AWOL and traveled to Pensacola to fight the Antichrist. (Jesus was not pleased. The FSA Special Security Officer was even madder.)

Now if we assume there really is a Jesus we have to also assume he isn’t high on the theory he can be dragged back to earth against his will, which is what they’re trying to do. He might just unload 2000 years of pent-up wrath on his followers and spare the rest of us...and people like Joel Osteen, Jim Bakker, Alex Jones and Creflo Dollar are at the top of his holy shitlist.

The only “heaven” we get is the memories of those we leave behind...and “he was a total fuckhead but he sure did a lot of praying when he wasn’t preying” isn’t the heaven you want.
