https://www.rawstory.com/2017/12/theological-scholar-explains-horrifying-reason-trumps-supporters-celebrated-armageddon-in-pensacola/Now, I dont know about you, but when I heard about Jerusalem where the King of Kings [applause] where our soon coming King is coming back to Jerusalem, it is because President Trump declared Jerusalem to be capital of Israel, Broxson predicted. The crowd cheered.
This week, theological scholar Dr. Diana Butler Bass wrote a Twitter thread explaining the link between recognition of Jerusalem, evangelical Christians, and the apocalypse. That is important because rebuilding the Temple is the event that will spark the events of the Book of Revelation and the End Times.
According to Bass, the counsel of evangelical adviser that Trump surrounds himself with take such End Times prophecies literally
Of all the possible theological dog-whistles to his evangelical base, this is the biggest, she continued. Trump is reminding them that he is carrying out Gods will to these Last Days. Theyve been waiting for this, praying for this. They want war in the Middle East. The Battle of Armageddon, at which time Jesus Christ will return to the Earth and vanquish all Gods enemies.
She warned that for some evangelicals this is considered a climax of history.
And Trump is taking them there. To the promised judgment, to their sure victory. The righteous will be ushered to heaven; the reprobate will be banished to hellfire, Bass went on. People believe this. Really believe this. Have given their lives to these ideas, sing about them in their churches, evangelize others, teach them in Sunday schools. And, this morning, with the news of Jerusalem, these people are ecstatic. This is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. And Donald Trump is not only acting on a campaign promise, but enacting a theological one.
She went on to explain that the reason many white evangelicals supported Trump to the tune of 80 percent is more than an abortion issue. Many actually believe that Trump is unfolding Gods purpose.
They believe that Donald Trump is Gods instrument to move us closer to the Rapture, the Judgment, and the End, she wrote. Because to them, thats actually the beginning the beginning of their reward and heavenly bliss.

As it is, they're a force. Worse, the dominionist movements have busily infiltrated most mainstream Christian sects so a majority of conservative Christians feel that government would do much better with religious guidance, while that same 30 millions plus more would support a full-blown theocratic dictatorship, masquerading as a democracy or not. Of course, guidance-lite is what Iranian voters were promised and the latter is what they got.
Serious business because the billionaire right is not only working with but overlaps the religious extremists in joint efforts to take over the U.S.

They believe Christ was the only begotten son of that god, that his mother was a virgin, that he performed various miracles, that he was crucified and died and then was resurrected. So, their religious beliefs and yours are probably pretty similar in many respects. Where you part company is in what you do as a result of that faith. Your faith inspires you to do certain things that you might not do otherwise, I imagine. Their faith inspires them to do different things.

(82,849 posts)The end times stuff is based on a very selective reading of scripture, cross-referencing disparate verses written centuries apart. It's as if someone was interpreting a William Shakespeare play in light of a Sam Shepard play.
But remember that James Comey tweet from last week, the one about justice rolling down like waters? That's from the book of Amos, and was a verse favored by Dr. King during the Civil Rights Era. The verses preceding that payoff get overlooked, but I think they're highly appropriate to quote for our friends who are so eager for the Day of the Lord:
18 Woe to you who long
for the day of the Lord!
Why do you long for the day of the Lord?
That day will be darkness, not light.
19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion
only to meet a bear,
as though he entered his house
and rested his hand on the wall
only to have a snake bite him.
20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light
pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?
21 I hate, I despise your religious festivals;
your assemblies are a stench to me.
22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings,
I will not accept them.
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,
I will have no regard for them.
23 Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream!"
For some reason, they never seem to think that some of that stern judgment and tribulation is going to be visited on their pointy little noggins.

(1,639 posts)A friend of mine who is religious said a lot of people in her community think Trump is the Anti-Christ.
This article in Right Wing Watch quotes prominent Christian leaders comparing him to the Persian King Cyrus who sent his captive Jewish population back to Israel.
My friend's community of religious thinkers is mostly African-American. The Christian leaders quoted in the Right Wing Watch article are mostly White Evangelicals. A few of those, in the past, have floated the idea that it was Obama who was the Anti-Christ.
There are so many ways at looking at all these developments that one would need the eyes of a fly to take it all in.
My take is that it doesn't matter whether any given prophecy about anything is true. People can make a prediction play out with their own actions. Anything that diverges from the prophecy slightly can be artistically re-framed to fit the narrative.
It is true that Kushner owns a building with the prophetic "666" in its address. Few Christian leaders seem to be mentioning this, because it doesn't paint their interpretation of events comfortably.
Here's a little tip: When speaking of the final book of the Christian scriptures, note that its name is "Revelation", singular, not "Revelations", plural. It supports your credibility when discussing the subject, and it really irks a Bible-fiend when they get it wrong and you correct them.
