The part of the book that finally got me to stop reading (following many other episodes like that, too depressing to cite here) was when he recounted the sad story of older Jews beginning to commit suicide because things had become so hopeless that their only out was offing themselves, and this was very soon after Hitler took over.

Based on a true story; fascinating, but I just couldn't keep going.
