All this time I've thought that "circular firing squad" meant that each shooter shoots the person to their left (or right).

If everyone on a firing squad shot to the left, then the whole squad (save one) would be killed and the accused prisoner would probably not be.

(54,087 posts)I was only joking around. But seriously, firing squads shoot forward. The metaphor is pretty clear. What you described, everyone shooting to the left, would be a "daisy-chain firing squad." And that could potentially involve an entirely different form of 'shooting'.
