US homeless count rises for first time in 7 yearsBy Associated Press December 6, 2017 | 2:04am
LOS ANGELES The nations homeless population increased this year for the first time since 2010, driven by a surge in the number of people living on the streets in Los Angeles and other West Coast cities.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released its annual Point in Time count Wednesday, a report that showed nearly 554,000 homeless people across the country during local tallies conducted in January. That figure is up nearly 1 percent from 2016.
Of that total, 193,000 people had no access to nightly shelter and instead were staying in vehicles, tents, the streets and other places considered uninhabitable. The unsheltered figure is up by more than 9 percent compared to two years ago.

(28,270 posts)Bush style great recession/depression crash coming right up folks!
ansible
(1,718 posts)Especially here in California where homelessness has gotten worse than it's ever been before. It's pure, insatiable greed from real estate scum(especially those assholes in the Bay Area) that have driven the cost of living through the roof that has fucked over so many people here.

(28,270 posts)Like it puts money in the pocket of all Americans LOL
Wall street loves it when companies mistreat and underpay their employees.
They really love it when they shutdown US operations and move to China.
I hear the stock market was really up right before the Great Depression in 29 too.

(28,270 posts)Thanks Trump you miserable POS!
gratuitous
(82,849 posts)Stop counting the homeless, and nobody will know if there are more or fewer homeless. Then Trump can just say he's solved the problem, Fox will repeat it ad nauseam, and everything goes away.
If stopping agencies from counting the homeless doesn't quite work, Congress will make it a felony to count the homeless.

(12,600 posts)Although flawless counts are impossible to come by the transient nature of homeless populations presents a major difficulty the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 39,471 veterans are homeless on any given night.
Approximately 12,700 veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation New Dawn (OND) were homeless in 2010. The number of young homeless veterans is increasing, but only constitutes 8.8% of the overall homeless veteran population.
Why are veterans homeless?
In addition to the complex set of factors influencing all homelessness extreme shortage of affordable housing, livable income and access to health care a large number of displaced and at-risk veterans live with lingering effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse, which are compounded by a lack of family and social support networks. Additionally, military occupations and training are not always transferable to the civilian workforce, placing some veterans at a disadvantage when competing for employment.
