Carina Driscoll will run for mayor of Burlington, the office famously held by her stepfather, Senator Bernie Sanders.
Driscoll announced Monday she will run as an independent, challenging incumbent Democrat Mayor Miro Weinberger, who is seeking a third term.
The South End resident has served on Burlington School Board, in the Vermont Legislature and on the Burlington City Council, and left the council in 2004 to raise her children and start a business, the Vermont Woodworking School.
Earlier this month, while still considering her run, Driscoll said she was motivated by seeing how public policy decisions get made in Burlington currently.

I will be voting for the Democratic candidate.

Joy had been calling for Sanders' tax returns during the last election.
He's still up for 2018. NO tax returns.
Carina Driscoll, no tax returns.
A voice on MSNBC attacked by Jane Sanders.
Hmmmm.....

(368 posts)the Sanders' marriage in a tweet? Joy started it and Jane corrected the record- as she should have. If someone is going to publicly and negatively speak about how my husband treats me, I'm going to respond as I'm sure practically everyone on DU would. "Don't start none, won't be none".

That's out there and can't be denied.
It's becoming apparent that there's open season on Joy Reid now, what with the unearthing of 8-year-old blog posts about her alledged anti-gay writings instead of the actual anti-hypocrisy intent of the posts.
Something is up. Is this an attempt to distract from the money plowed into the daughter's business by Jane Sanders when she was still the head of Burlington College (and we all know what a debacle the direction of that now-defunct college was).
Is Joy Reid, because of her effectiveness, suddenly being targeted for a comedown as was Al Franken?
PatsFan87
(368 posts)It's all speculation really. I am responding to VermontKevin's phrasing that Jane "picked a fight" by responding to what Joy said. Nobody is "picking a fight" when they are defending themselves or their husband from something negative that is said about them.

(368 posts)then you don't need to drag family members into it when you aren't privy to what their relationship is like. Last time I checked, Joy wasn't their family friend, marriage counselor, journalist traveling with them from campaign stop to campaign stop. Using a 5 second clip during a yearlong campaign cycle where he says "don't stand next to me" (And what does that mean? "Don't hog my spotlight", "I'm going to be waving my hands during this speech"?) to make assumptions about him not respecting Jane/treating her as an equal/ etc. is a bit desperate and grabbing at straws.
I'm guessing Joy doesn't have any accounts from female politicians, journalists, staffmembers about Bernie treating them differently? If she does, let's see her bring them forward.

(59,507 posts)Senators, by law, fill out their financial disclosure forms - which Bernie did, even though he never put out his taxes for 2015. As to her daughter, I don't think it typical for candidates for mayor to do that.
That said, even though I did not like the late at night actions on Burlington Telecom, I think that Miro has been a very good mayor and will vote for him.

(16,998 posts)this the scrutiny it deserves. Only had time for a quick look, but this article really deserves a good read. Looks like Vermonters are not going to stand for this hypocrisy.
Quote from the article:
This was a sweetheart deal for Carina Driscoll, Jane Sanders daughter, said Moore. Driscoll is the stepdaughter of Bernie Sanders.

MineralMan
(146,339 posts)It's just a local race for Mayor. I doubt MSNBC even knows about it. As for Senator Sanders' tax returns, I'd like to see those, too. That they were not presented is puzzling and worrisome. But, that has nothing to do with his stepdaughter run for Mayor of Burlington, a race that is of zero interest to anyone who doesn't live in that city.
VermontKevin
(1,473 posts)of national interest if there is a Bernie 2020 campaign.

(146,339 posts)Being Mayor of Burlington is not a pathway to higher office, I think. Sanders got elected for other reasons. Have you ever been to Burlinton, VT?
If Bernie Sanders runs in 2020, which I doubt very much, there will be many, many other issues that become part of the conversation. His stint as Mayor of Burlington will not be one of them. The tax returns might, though.
