'We've already lost' - GOP takes stock of the nightmare unfolding in Alabama

‘We’ve already lost’ — GOP takes stock of the nightmare unfolding in Alabama
BY KATIE GLUECK AND ALEX ROARTY McClatchy Washington Bureau
DECEMBER 04, 2017 05:00 AM

WASHINGTON
The Alabama Senate race is days away, but already, top Republicans are admitting defeat.

Whether their candidate, Roy Moore, overcomes multiple on-the-record accusations of child molestation and sexual misconduct to win on Dec. 12 or not, top party officials concede that Alabama has been a disaster for the national brand — and either result will put the Republican congressional majorities in jeopardy.

“There’s no outcome here in which the Republican Party can say, ‘Well, that turned out OK,’ no outcome where we can sit back and breathe a sigh of relief,” said Scott Jennings, a GOP strategist who is close to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. “Both outcomes are bad for the overall health and brand of the Republican Party.”

If Moore wins, Republicans fear that candidates up and down the ballot will be forced to answer for his every alleged action and confirmed comment, as the Senate grapples with whether to seat him. If he loses to Democrat Doug Jones, then the Republican hold on the Senate majority will grow even more tenuous, threatening to grind congressional action to a halt and fueling progressives on the left.

Name one Republican who has put the United States first. Name one time a Republican acted honorably and truly patriotically.

Power.
Ideology.
Money.

Those are the GOP's motivations. They don't give a shit about country.

Okay. I'll stick money in there but I was thinking that money and power were the same. I won't quibble about that.

However, I will quibble with you about country. I think Republicans are okay with something that just also happens to be good for the country. I mean that never, ever happens. I agree. But I do think they would be okay with doing something that just happens to benefit the country.

But then if it's bad for the country they aren't going to lose any sleep or anything.

Defenders of pedophiles...servants of the 1%...haters of the vast majority of Americans who blow their money on "booze and women"...traitors who conspire with Russia to destroy American democracy...lawless bastards...defenders of nazi and KKK killers...defenders of slavery and the rebel traitors that tried to destroy the USA in the Civil war, republicans are neo-confederates.

and others have already come out and said they believe the women.

They will be seating a child molester. They have already said they don't want to do that.

If they do seat him it will cause people all over the country to come out and vote for Democrats the next time they have a chance

And every Senator in the Republican caucus will welcome Roy Moore with open arms. Oh, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski might hold back a smidgen, but even they will embrace their newest colleague.

Nobody knows what will happen in Alabama or in 2018. But hopefully the worrywarts in the GOP are right and they lose big.

Decent people will be disgusted by a Moore win - republicans? Not so much.

As for GOP candidates up and down the ballet answering for Moore - republicans run from questions already. They'll simply continue to run...or have the person asking removed from the town hall by security.
