The tax bill moving its way through Congress is routinely referred to as a $1.5 trillion tax cut. And, in some ways, thats true: on net, it would reduce the amount of taxes collected by the federal treasury by about $1.5 trillion over 10 years.
But that figure masks the eye-popping scale and audacity of the GOPs rushed restructuring of the economy. Most immediately, the plan will take a large chunk out of state and local revenue that isnt factored into that total. But more broadly, the bill cuts taxes by a full $6 trillion over a decade.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Friday afternoon Senate Republicans have the votes to pass the plan, which gets referred to as only a $1.5 trillion cut because it raises $4.5 trillion in taxes elsewhere. But the key question is who gets a tax hike and who gets a tax cut. Put simply, the bulk of the tax cut is going toward the rich, while the tax increases go to everybody else.
And so the bill, properly described, is two things: the largest tax cut and also the biggest tax increase in American history.

(51,646 posts)from Booker, MoveOn, NotOnePenny, Indivisible, Bernie, etc and there have been new fact emerging since Fri. One is that there is a 1/2 trillion dollar increase to the deficit over what was originally estimated.
They explained that there are a few weeks left and it is NOT OVER! KEEP calling and sharing the facts on social media. Also stay focused...this is our biggest priority now and the other issues are also important but we can NOT be distracted from getting the word out. There are hundreds of events planned for this week alone. If there is none near you, call and call friends and family in other states. We have to flip 23 of the 28 congressmen who voted "No" on one of the two other bills and there is going to be a "negotiation compromise" with the two chambers. If we win in Alabama we need two senators. Ryan is going to choose who will be on his closed door "conference committee". We will need to target them too. (51,646 posts)as a reply. There is a lot of news to spread. I posted info about the call yesterday under Activist Headquarters and haven't seen any posts about it other than mine. Do people really want to hear me go on and on about resisting? I feel like a cheerleader and/or a pain in the ass sometimes.
