Having served in the military, assault rifles like the M-16 are very dangerous weapons and should never be on the street. The .223 round is meant to tumble and do maximum damage. There is no reason own one. Such a weapon can be turned automatic with just a file and a little knowledge. The defenders of owning such weapons are on the wrong side of the issue.
Now the NRA will want laws requiring everyone to carry a gun. It will be interesting to see how the shooter got these weapons. This event will cause the pro gun lobby to go absolutely berserk now.
The GOP will now use this issue to divide and fracture the country even further.

How many fully automatic M-16s do you think are on the "street"? In any case, they cost something in the ballpark of $10K. Legally owned fully automatic weapons are virtually never used in crimes. Their owners are the most law-abiding gun owners in the land.
The .223 round is meant to tumble and do maximum damage.
It's less powerful than the antiquated .30-30 which is used for deer hunting.
There is no reason own one.
I wanted one, so I bought one. Mine is chambered for the 6.8 SPC cartridge, mind you. I wanted something with a bit more "oomph", as it were.
Such a weapon can be turned automatic with just a file and a little knowledge.
Absolutely absurd. Feel free to try to document this assertion (and good luck with that).
The defenders of owning such weapons are on the wrong side of the issue.
I thought being on the side of the Constitution was the right side. Go figure...
Now the NRA will want laws requiring everyone to carry a gun
Please document any official NRA document advocating a law which requires every person in the United States to carry a gun.
I'll wait (and wait, and wait...)
It will be interesting to see how the shooter got these weapons.
I assume he simply bought them. Why would that be "interesting"?
This event will cause the pro gun lobby to go absolutely berserk now.
It's not the pro gun crowd who screams from the rooftops for legislation following a shooting.
The GOP will now use this issue to divide and fracture the country even further.
The only ones "dividing and fracturing" the country (bit of an exaggeration there, yes?) over the issue of guns are those who want to ban them.

(39,171 posts)in many states it is illegal to hunt deer with a 5.56mm because it lack killing power against large animals.

(60,567 posts)The types that shoot 3-round bursts qualify as fully automatic according to federal law.
You can't just walk into Jim's Sporting Goods and buy one.
...Such a weapon can be turned automatic with just a file and a little knowledge.
A little more knowledge than you have, evidently.

(29,322 posts)if that's the case you don't need hunting rifles that fire similar sized rounds and similar velocity, etc.
