Former Vice President Biden tells InStyle what he would offer if he were to run for president in 2020:
I think this moment in American history sort of fits into my wheelhouse and the strengths I have. I am, I think most people would say, fairly knowledgeable about American foreign policy. Im pretty good at diplomacy internationally and bringing people together, cutting through and settling things. And I think what people are looking for most, and I hope I have it, is authenticity. I have great relationships with my Republican colleagues. They trust me, and I trust them. We can work things through.
And also, he continues, I think the defining issue of our time is sustaining the middle class. You know, when I got to Washington they called me Middle Class Joe, and it wasnt meant as a compliment. But the middle class is the reason for our social and political stability.
He exhales. Anyway, Im familiar with the issues, and I think I could bring some talent there. So its not that I dont think Im equipped to do the job. Well just see.

- He will be seventy eight years old
- The prospect of presidential candidate Biden has always been better than presidential candidate Biden. His 88 and 08 runs ended in disaster.

(11,907 posts)while I think we should perhaps have a younger candidate, we should consider an elder statesman at the. helm.
This government is being cored out like a melon and we will need people in there to restore what has been destroyed bu the Trumpists. That will take both proven leadership AND an in depth working knowledge of how the government is structured and how it works. Joe IS that guy.

Joe Biden is a fine and mostly honorable man, but if all the Democratic Party does is look to old politicians to run for office, it will never get anywhere.
Among the reasons the Republicans have been so successful is that they've successfully recruited younger people to run for office. The Democrats, not so much. If we have any hope of getting younger voters to vote we need candidates that appeal to them. And old people are not such a good idea.
Heck, I was 12 years old when JFK was elected, and at that age was not even remotely impressed at the idea that he was so young and handsome. It took a very long time, until I was at least 50, to start considering him young. As for handsome, well his looks never appealed to me, but that's not important.

Those are your words. Trump is 71. And god forbid we should have a seasoned Democrat run for office.

(25,929 posts)Paul Ryan is 47.
Yeah, Mitch McConnell is 75. But so many others in office are a lot younger.
The average age of the Democratic House leadership is 72 years old, whereas the average age of Republican House leadership is 48 years. (I love the internet. That was so easy to find.)
That's a 24 year difference, which is huge.
If we don't start getting younger candidates in office, all of the seasoned Democrats will die off, and then what? Nancy Pelosi is 77, Dianne Feinstein is 84. And here on DU is is practically a bannable offense to suggest that they might consider retiring some time.

ANd I think he'd be a great President.
But he has a history of being a mediocre candidate.

Surely the Democrats have better, more dynamic talent. Joe had his chance, twice, and couldn't get out of the primary. And he can take a seat with all the sexist shade he's directing at Clinton (saying there was "no joy" is just another version of "smile" ). No.
