"He's a very generous person. We give 10 percent of our income to our church every year. Do you think that is the kind of person who is trying to hide things, or do things?"
-- Ann Romney, in an interview on ABC News, defending her husband for not releasing their tax returns but not noting the irony that only their tax returns can prove what they give to charity.

Well, Ann, then what does he have to fear about releasing several years worth of tax returns then?

(95,337 posts)or 10% based on all those hidden tax havens he has.
Perhaps he doesn't want to show his tax returns because it will show he doesn't actually tithe 10% of everything he has.

(30,885 posts)...that maybe the tax returns sill show that he only gives to his church.
Mitt's "generosity" has long been a talking point, but guess what?
Most of the people I know tithe 10% to their churches.
It doesn't make him a superhero. And yeah, my guess is that the books are cooked in one way or another when it comes to "Ten percent of WHAT? The whole enchilada or the amount his accountants moved over to the column on the left?"

(48 posts)Biden was WAY lower.
Stats tend to favor the right wing on charitable giving, btw. Obama's historical numbers before his presidency are radically lower.

(2,322 posts)...student loans and such means we can forgive him if he wasn't so generous with gifts to church or charity. Mitt hasn't that that excuse--but more to the point, I'd like to know what charities those donations are funding. As said, if his church is just another super pac, then all Mitt's doing is using it as another way to bankroll his political career. 10% may go to the church, but that doesn't mean that 10% goes to helping the homeless.

(1,947 posts)We'll be able to compute his actual income from what he pays to his church.
Also, we will see that his loyalty his first to his church, second to his money...and dead last to his country.

(2,654 posts)if Romney were to unfortunately be elected President, would he then tithe 10% of that income to the LDS church? Because, if so, since we all pay that salary (I include myself because, even though I'm not a US citizen and can't vote, I still pay taxes like everyone else), wouldn't that constitute the government's endorsement of one religion and thus be unconstitutional?

So doing the minimum is now "VERY GENEROUS"?

(115,976 posts)He's probably even richer than he's letting on, and if he's tithing that means the LDS church has received millions from him over the years.
The fundies don't care much for Mormons, whom they consider to be heretics, but they'll vote for Mittens because they hate Obama. But what if the fundies found out how much Mittens really has given to that nest of heretics in Utah? They might just stay home. The first rule of right-wing politics is that you must never piss off the fundies. And millions of dollars donated to a heretical cult could do just that.

(100,139 posts)So Mitt would just be contributing the bare minimum if this were true.

(22,759 posts)I have seen more abuse in the church than most other institutions... the lack of comprehension about the 'real' world is astounding... don't misunderstand, I have been part of the church in the past (had multiple relative pastors, went to seminary myself) and there is good, but lord, giving 10% to the church is indicative of NOTHING other than you are obedient to your church rule
abuse, sexual misconduct, financial fraud, etc... are all part of the church at some time

(687 posts)Are they Tithing 10% based on all their income to their church or are they evading fully reporting all they make to their church, too?
