(Bloomberg) -- A private firm that produced an opposition-research dossier that claimed President Donald Trumps campaign colluded with Russia asked a federal court to prevent the House Intelligence Committee from obtaining its financial records.
Fusion GPSs lawyer, Joshua Levy, filed a complaint in U.S. District Court in Washington Friday to stop its bank from complying with a congressional subpoena seeking two years of bank records. The firm said the subpoena from committee Chairman Devin Nunes violates its First Amendment rights and various laws.
In response, the committee said in court papers that it has the constitutional right to subpoena that information and that the committee will file more documents to support its argument.
The legal battle is the latest clash between Fusion and House Intelligence Committee Republicans. Two executives of the firm refused to answer questions last week in a private meeting with the committee, invoking their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. The firm argued that demanding the executives testimony violated the First Amendment and would chill those running for office from conducting opposition research in an election.

The solution is very simple Fusion GPS, don't have scumbags for clients.

(32,917 posts)The pee tape was disclosed in the Steele dossier that was written by a British MI5 spy who covered Moscow and Putin. He's the one who turned in the info on Trump (+ Manafort, Flynn and others) colluding with Putin. The info was turned over to the FBI last year before the election. It only mentioned the pee tape in passing, and it was really about collusion and quid pro quos.
Fusion GPS didn't have anything to do with that. They wrote an oppo report for one of the GOP candidates (probably Ted Cruz or Jeb Bush) and it discussed all the reasons why their guy is a better candidate and the other guy (Trump) isn't. Every candidate has these reports done, including the Democratic candidates, because they have to be ready with ammunition whenever they get attacked during the campaign. The oppo reports are supposed to be kept confidential, that's why Fusion doesn't want it all over the news.
Nobody knew about the pee tape until the Steele dossier started making the rounds, rumors were flying after the election.
