edit to note that my intent is not to have people disclose their weight; just as a means to see how we and the world fare weight wise (which is often an indicator of health and health costs) http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/adult/causes/index.html
worth the time...

(7,699 posts)with a bmi of 62, LOL. Anyone who has seen Biggest Loser regularly knows what Tonga means.
I have a BMI of 28, lower than 64% of females in my age group. That is sad, but I knew that
already...all I have to do is go anywhere in public to see that. It seems worse here in Pa than
it was in Maryland, and the grocery stores carry some hideous stuff; hard to find low fat and/or
low salt and/or vegetarian anything here.

(46,436 posts)I have a higher BMI than 51% of women my age in the world. I guess that makes me pretty average.
That was an interesting graph. My BMI is most like Norway and Cape Verde. ?

(11,802 posts)But it BMI is flawed. Super fit athletes who are muscular have high BMIs.

(6,843 posts)Pretty much any dedicated gym rat will have an elevated BMI. Mine is 31, yet I have a 34 inch waist and I am 15% body fat (which most body builders would call "hard" but certainly not shredded). BMI is a piss poor measurement.

What if I had a *really* good job that I worked hard to get. Would it be "insensitive" to discuss it with less successful friends?
These questions aren't really that easy to answer. I'm not sure I know the answers, either.

When a person's appearance is tied to his intrinsic worth, then I think it is a problem.

(19,458 posts)Love this part: "If everyone in the world had the same BMI as you, it would remove 6,625,866 tonnes from the total weight of the world's population" And I am most likely a person from Japan!
I don't eat red meat, only have fast food a few times a year, don't eat junk food, or soda. I avoid processed foods as much as possible. But oh how I love the baked goods. and tacos.
The thing that is disturbing to me, is that when I went to school we had probably 2 obese students in the school. Now, the 20 something I know, many of them are overweight, as were many of the kids in the schools my daughter's attended. And these were schools in upper middle class suburbia, where people think that kids are less likely to be overweight.

(13,657 posts)I'm fairly large naturally. I can be pretty lean at 275. I do a lot of lifting at the gym but should back off. My guts not that big. I have kind of an old school circus strongman look.
I got carried away thinking I could get into some senior power lifting at 50 or some crazy thing. I got to where I could bench 300 lbs again but could tell I was going to tear up my shoulder if I went any farther. Now I keep thinking I'm going to change my diet and workout to lean out a little. I probably need to just quit lifting and just do cardio.
My bp is good and cholesterol and all that. I donate triple units of blood platelets every two weeks. Not bad for a big fat guy.
handmade34
(22,759 posts)at 60 I'm just getting into biking... just got a Trek Hybrid (yesterday) and did 30 miles this morning...

(13,657 posts)I was a donor before I ever thought of getting into the business. That's kind of how I got the job. They make it pretty easy for us to donate if we're working at the center. I'm on the road quite a bit though so I have to do it on my days off about half the time.
We have these chairs set up with computers. They have the screen and keyboard on a boom and headphones. I usually watch concert dvd's or movies while I donate. Platelets take about two hours. It was The Guess Who-Running Back Through Canada last time. An awesome show they did in 2000!

(49,212 posts)The naked eye can do a better job distinguishing between healthy bodies and unhealthy ones than the BMI does. Just looking can tell the difference between healthfully slender people and the sick or starved, or unhealthy fatness or a healthy athletic body, but the BMI can not.

My waist size is currently 28 as a male. I have a 10% in body fat which is in the athletic scale.
Sadly, I only have a 4 pack rather than a 6, but I do have that nice little sex line going down my hips so I'm pretty happy about that.

(1,741 posts)...for me personally, as well as across populations. But I don't like the slightly accusatory tone of this tool. It seem like it's saying if you're overweight, you're taking food from others or you're adding too much weight to the planet or something... as though obesity is like a carbon footprint or comparable to wealth disparity (the "haves" and the "have nots" . We know that in this country obesity is tied more to poverty than to wealth.
