Vt. city creates abortion protest 'buffer zone'

Jul 18, 2012 4:51pm

(NECN: Jack Thurston, Burlington, Vt.) -

Rita Mantone and Agnes Clift stood outside the Burlington, Vt. office of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England Wednesday morning for what they called a "loving, prayerful protest." The women from Underhill and South Burlington, respectively, said they hoped to show mothers who may have come to the center seeking abortions that choosing life for their babies is an alternative.

Soon, however, the city of Burlington will tell the protestors to find a new place to pray.

"We just ask [mothers] if they'll come and talk to us," Clift said. "But we can't do that from across the street."

This week, in a 13-1 vote, Burlington's City Council approved an ordinance creating buffer zones around reproductive health care facilities. Protestors will be kept 35 feet from the driveway and door patients use.

"We've heard a lot about [patients] feeling harassed and bullied," said Jill Krowinski of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England.
