Source: PoliticusUSA, by Jason Easley
Trouble could be brewing for Republicans in deep red Alabama as the first poll after the Republican Senate primary runoff finds Democratic candidate Doug Jones trailing Republican Roy Moore 50.2%-44.5%.
The poll was conducted for Decision Desk HQ by Opinion Savvy, and revealed, Moore boasts a huge lead among evangelical voters, 67.8% to 28%, while Jones boasts an even larger lead among non-evangelicals, 69.7% to 26.7%. Among African-American voters, Moore peels off 24.8% to Jones 70.9%, while among white voters, Jones has a surprising 36.1% to Moores 58.5%.
What this means is that Moore is a weaker general election candidate in Alabama than Luther Strange would have been. It is only one poll, but it does hint that the door could be open for Democrats to run a competitive race in the state.
As in other special elections in deep red states, dumping millions of dollars into the state to help the Democratic candidate wont be enough to win. Republicans have a deep partisan advantage in Alabama, but there is one potentially powerful case that Jones could make. The Democrats could flip this seat by making this election all about Roy Moore and how he would embarrass his home state if he won.

(8,760 posts)I think that those numbers won't hold up.....I have hope.

(16,104 posts)and more black Alabamians indicate a willingness to turnout, those numbers WILL change.
The key here will be Democratic turnout combined with Republican disillusion.

(4,897 posts)But Dems need to impress upon the AA voters that if elected, a Senator Roy Moore would take every step to "MAGA", and in his fevered brain stem, that means doing away with voting rights, civil rights, etc.

(82,849 posts)Alabama is a comparatively inexpensive media market. Hold a series of rallies for Jones in some of the smaller towns, generate local excitement, talk directly to the newspapers and radio stations without the Fox filter, and talk up how Alabama could be in the forefront of a political wave that could mean better health care for everyone, not just the wealthy who can afford it. Point out Republican impotence to get anything done and the broken promises. Doug Jones will make a far better Senator than Roy Moore, and that he'll have the interests of all Alabamans at heart.
This is a 10 week sprint of an election. Moore's recent troubles over financial disclosures raise questions about his ethics and morals.

But Moore has never been on a national stage like this before. It is going to get UGLY!

(16,104 posts)Since there are 52 Republican senators right now, where exactly do you want to fight for a senate seat December 12th?
If not in Alabama?

(33,244 posts)Maine, Nevada, Colorado are all more realistic than AL.
But sure, fight everywhere. I have a hard time having faith in the American Voter right now. They've proved themselves to be Rubes.

(1,058 posts)It's more of a race between Jones, Moore, and not showing up to vote.
There's almost no point in trying to get people to decide between Jones and Moore. If you're the type of person who is likely to who up to vote, you've probably made up your mind. If Democrats want to win here, it's about the ground game of physically getting people out to vote who might otherwise not show.
