Tragedy in Puerto Rico reminded me of the musical West Side Story

It debuted in 1957 and nothing has changed. The great song America has two lines still pertinent today...
"Life is alright in America"
"If you're all white in America"

It was about coming to America from Puerto Rico.

Sad that it is still true.

America is one of the best songs of all time. It's in 3/4 time, but the beat is actually a slowed 1-2, followed by a quicker 1-2-3 (yeah, I was part of a group that did the song).

It was high school marching band. I just didn't want to go into the unrelated story. However, during the bridge between songs, the band divided into two sides, leaving a lone trombone player in middle with his Maria solo. He got more cheers than the football game.

from West Side Story at the school talent show in 1963. We played the entire scene. Got us a standing ovation. Made us both cry, too, since the school year was almost over and we were going in different directions to colleges the next fall. Sadly, our relationship didn't survive the separation. The song still brings tears to my eyes.

Plaintive.

Sad that this country refuses to learn the lessons given gently.

A boy like that would kill your brother,
Forget that boy and find another.

I think every US citizen of Puerto Rican ancestry is going to vote in every election in the near future. And they won't vote for the party that made this tragedy worse.
