So that's the question: If your money was in a big bank as of, say, 2008, have you moved it into a credit union yet?
(And if you don't plan to, pls explain in a reply -- thanks!)

(110,159 posts)competitive local in town. i am just thrilled that hubby finally got pissed at the other, and i was able to move the accounts to this one. actually, it was the man that we followed over. the other local is all repug, greedy, imo dishonest and pissed me off regularly.

(32,116 posts)moved our main savings and another smaller checking to a small local bank that we love. Also have a smaller savings at a credit union. I haven't moved that household checking because the ATMs are convenient etc ... but I'm not ruling it out.

(32,116 posts)but sometimes you can find local ones that allow everyone in the community to join. Good luck!
That's the problem.
Haven't found one. There are sites that help out to see where you qualify but, I haven't found one that would take me.

(19,458 posts)for convenience moving to another area.. Once I'm there, I'll get back into another credit union locally.
I have key bank now, and they do operate their branches like community banks, though. They will call you from the branch if there is anything weird going on, or if you need to get a deposit in. But yeah.. they still are corporate vampires.

(36,281 posts)Best banking service I've ever gotten.
I have money tied up in long term CDs that are still giving 5%
The only credit union I belong to has privatized after they closed down the plant.
I do bank at a small local bank and a medium sized county wide bank as well as 2 local banks that have been purchased by huge banks. I started out fine, they just changed hands, not my fault.

(13,366 posts)I can't even afford to keep a bank account OPEN, much less move my money...because your question assumes I *have* it.
Sorry, but this is a big reality for many and I think it needs to be counted as a percentage of your poll.
**How many Duers are without any property or assets?**
the only things of value I have are my car and computer...in fact the Tv just blew this weekend, but that doesn't matter since we cant afford cable anyhow...and that TV was given to us when the neighbors across the street got foreclosed on and needed to 'lighten their truckload'
So ya, no bank account, not since Oct of last year, just couldn't keep enough in the account to defray the fees, and all it would take was ONE thing being returned and a whole domino effect would create a $100 hole at the beginning of EVERY month. So I have a coffee can and a shovel for when I need to start 'stashing money' ...like that is ever gonna happen

(755 posts)I like my credit union but it still set up like its 1972. One teller, long lines, not very many atms. So every 2 weeks, I go stand in line, read the paper for 20 minutes even if only 2 people are in front of me, and suck it up.
My personal is still at one of the big banks. ATM is convenient, and I feel safer buying online with their debit card, no lines.

(2,769 posts)One, a local bank for my checking account and
Two, a branch of a big bank for my business account.
The BBB (big branch bank) planned to charge a whopping $25/mo service fee on my business checking account. I complained about that to the BBB manager and not only did they waive that fee, but eliminated ANY fees on my account.

(233 posts)I like the idea and have tried to get others to move to credit unions.
But in my area, the offerings don't seem to be as convenient or useful as the bank I'm with.
However, even that bank isn't one of the worst offenders. I vowed never to go back to the Chase's, HSBC's etc a few years ago.

(28,890 posts)It took me two or three years to get completely out of Chase,
and I'm very happy.
My reason for leaving Chase was Chase's business practices
and complete disdain for me as a customer. First, they
charged me a fee for something that wasn't my fault and
wouldn't return it. And then they didn't even care if I left.
I guess my accounts were just chump change to them.

(10,540 posts)Moving our money could have a real impact; at least it feels more effective to me than writing letters to my extreme R-wing gov'l representatives. PLUS, my credit union does give me a much better deal on everything, and much better, more personal service, than my old big bank used to.
